How about this: I'm ex-Army, so I know how to gourmet-up field rats, or C rats, IMP's ( slang for 'instant mashed potatoes' ) or MRE's ( 'Meal, Ready To Eat' - M1A1 ) as they're called now. I once stopped by a surplus store eons ago in Philly, PA. I was looking to replace some stolen tools for under the bunk. While I was rootin' around, I came across 6 crates of modern MRE's, the type you buy at camping stores for like $15 bucks a meal. Ya know, the 'Magic Pantry' type. They were all mixed up with the old stuff. $20 bucks a crate. I bought em all. Kept me in quick meals for months. Since then, I always have a few of those 'boil-in-the-bag' meals ready for those days when you're in a hurry, or for emergencies, as they are preserved to last for decades.

Field rations will keep you till the next. It's WINTER, have something that will sustain you in the truck. Even if it is just for a traffic accident. Crackers suck!

I couldn't agree more ... I really couldn't BUT have you ever had any of these modern 'rats' they're given the troops these days ? They really are made by the like of Magic Pantry, or whomever has the current contract, and they're really not bad ..... AND I used to hate "C" rats so bad I had no choice BUT to learn how to make them go down easier.

Ya know, there's this modern invention called "canned food." It does require a tool known as a "can opener." Many can be eaten cold, but a small propane stove, or an even newer invention called a "microwave oven" can be used to prepare real food. There's also something known as "frozen food." Just gotta warm it up!

    :biggrin_25525:

You're not "in" any more troop! You're authorized to consume "real food" without the "top" resorting to non-judicial punishment!

Thank you. Finally someone has understood ( I think ) what I'm talkin about. I was stuck up north for 4 days in a blizzard years ago. And crackers DO suck ... but if you have a few cans of ( example ) sardines to go with them, they're not bad. I had lot's of boil-in-the-bag meals and a bottle of rum - plus my 'blizzard' pay layover pay - it was like a vacation !!!

I understood just fine.. Last time I was home I pressured canned enough meals to last me a month.. Plus my fridge has food for a week or more.. 20lb bag of charcoal.. BBQ smoker/cooker, lunch box cooker, butane stove.. I eat real food even if I am up to my windows in snow..
