    i am a type-2 dibetic who had a heart attack in july.i am planning to return to driving in febuary.i am currently using insulin,though i am not dependent on it.in other words,if i can't use it,i'm not going into a coma.i can come off it and go back on pills,but it's easier with insulin.so my ? is,does the law say any insulin use needs a waiver,or does dependency?

    REGULATION
    391.41 Physical qualifications for drivers
    (b) A person is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person—
    (3) Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus currently requiring insulin for control;

    GUIDANCE TO PHYSICIANS
    391.43
    Diabetes. If insulin is necessary to control a diabetic driver's condition, the driver is not qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. If mild diabetes is present and it is controlled by use of an oral hypoglycemic drug and/or diet and exercise, it should not be considered disqualifying. However, the driver must remain under adequate medical supervision.

    I hope that helps.

    I was diagnosed with Type 2 in March of this year. I Take 'Glucophage' once in the morning and once at night. Also take take 'Synthroid' for my Thyroid. I see the Dr. every 3 months...The Dr. signed off on a 1 yr. medical card...so, good to go.

    I think you both need to review the recent rules. FMCSA does allow for a waiver on interstate driving for diabetes. They also are allowed to drive intrastate as well.

    Yes there is a waiver for type 1. Also they are about to lift the restrictions where any diabetic can drive if it's controlled.

    Type 2 is okay as long as it's controlled.

    The key as you know regardless of which route you take is to maintain a low carb, balanced diet, eating pretty close to the same times 4-5 times a day to maintain balance in your blood glucose. Avoid white breads, buns, etc. and check your sugar all day long. Not so much to stay driving, but to combat this god awful disease and fight it as long as possible. If you don't take it seriously, you will lose your feet, your eye sight, etc. its simply a matter of time.

    Gasp! Are you saying a working DOT officer doesn't know all the rules and exemptions?

    What should we do now? Write more rules of course... gotta love the gov't.
