Hello, my name is "Female Driver", lol, and I'm going to be training for my CDL sometime in the next month or two as I'm looking to get a family vacation out of the way before starting this journey.

I love to drive, and love to drive big trucks. We moved to WI from WA four years ago, and I loved every minute of driving that large Penske truck.... which is good because my husband was too nervous. I felt like such a ######, driving the mountain ranges with the semis, lol.

I have learned quite a lot from lurking on this forum, and plan on learning a lot more.

I realize that I need experience under my belt before I can land the job of my dreams, and I am prepared to be away from home for at least a year minimum. There are an amazing amount of good, local/regional type trucking jobs in my area... I just need that 1-2 years experience. Ideally, I'd like to do team driving with my husband in a few years, but I'm not entirely sure he'd get comfortable enough to drive a big rig like that. We'll see.

    Anyhow, that's me.

Hi and welcome , as a former driver, my advice is too listen too the old truckers, put in a big mixing bowl and only then it might come out some good, trucker's know how too pull the wool over newbee eyes too, but just listen , learn as well it's not just driving a truck, it's also about how too load your trl , if you do van trailer, you might have too unload your own trailer too, learn the rules of the shipping and rec dock and you will go far, never ever get in a hurry at these places or they make you go too the end of line if you tell them off, you have too lot's paitents with these place's, depending on what your loading,:biggrin_25512:

Thank you, Everett and "hi" Gambler.

Listening to truckers is on the agenda via this website and my husband's work (he works at a truck stop). Already I'm getting what I think is good advice, and what I think may be a load of BS. I'm getting a lot of people trying to talk me out of it, which is good on one hand, but sorta frustrating on the other since a lot of the negative comments are due to me having a ###### (a female bit and not a male bit - why is the technical term for that part censored, lol?).

I'm not entirely thrilled about unloading, and all the "tough" stuff, but that said, I want to be able to do it all, and do it well enough to impress others. As it stands now (because I don't have real life experience), I want to do flat bed. We'll see, I suppose.

    Thanks for the advice

Welcome. All I can say from my point of view when it comes to being new to the industry is this:

Be kind, be friendly, but never be a doormat. There's a strong difference between being calculated and firm, and being rude and brutal. It never hurts to make friends in the industry.

If hubby was nervous in a penske he might not be cut out for 18 wheelers maybe after training he will relax but that could be an expensive maybe, given the fact that CDL schools can be upwards of 6k. Good luck & be safe.

    Thanks Jiruden and rodzilla.

Yeah, I'm not very confident my husband would do well. I waited until we were out of all the mountain ranges before letting him have a go - it lasted less than an hour and he said he white knuckled it the whole time. That's not much of a good sign, lol. We'll see though. Yeah, I'd hate to throw money down the drain via a trucking school :(

If your husband is this way, mayby with luck, you can train him, very slowly one day at a time, mayby you find a trucking job , that has lot's local freight in area, what would you would is go pick the load up in florida, drive home, then it would deliver like a 100 miles away from your home, tell husband it ok , take him along as a passenger too rec and back home, each time going a little futher out and let him get used to it, now i know that's a long shot, if anything ever happen, but hey you never know, some are cutout for it, others no,:biggrin_25521:
