In three days I'm starting orientation with Schneider driving tankers. Schneider is one of the few companies that will take a fresh CDL school grad and train them in tankers. I will go light on the basic Schneider stuff, plenty of posts already.

I will describe what Schneider says about tankers, driving, driver fitness, driver protection and finally what life is like in the 48 state chemical transportation lanes.

    Hope I don't bore you.:biggrin_25520:

The training is in Green Bay initially for 8 days. Then it switches to Gary, Indiana for two days. After that you ride with a training engineer for a couple of weeks.

I know that we are required to have long sleeve shirts which the other divisions are not. I also had to be evaluated when I got my physical as to my ability to use a respirator. That was just a questionnaire and a bit of extra listening to my chest by the doctor. If she was concerned there is an extra test where you have to blow into some device but I wasn't asked to do that.

Besides the respirator, tanker drivers are assigned protective clothing and a hard hat. You can't be allergic to latex both for the gloves and respirator.

One last thing, bring your receipt for the hazmat fingerprinting. Schneider reimburses you for it.

most chemical plants you will be going in require long sleeves.

I was leased to Schneider for 6 years and did bulk for about 3 months. You will be going to some very interesting places with them as they do just about any waste hauling they can get their hands on. I did loads from SafteyKleen and also hauled to some mines out in WV which were quite the experience, especially the one I had to actually get lowered down into by a D8 dozer!!!

They are very though and safety is the #1 thing there. I think they are a great place for new drivers to work. Best of luck to you!!

The blowing into a device is a pulmonary function test . I have worked for 2 different companies that required periodic renewal PFT's . They are not required by OSHA .

I plan on switching over from bulk from the van side even if you're an experienced driver do u still have to run with a trainer when u get switched over during training

I don't know but would expect you do. There are a few things in the tanker world that a van driver wouldn't have exposure to.
