Here's a real moron for your examination. He drove a 51,000 pound truck and trailer over a bridge with a rating of 6000 pounds. On the 0 to 100 bridge rating scale, this bridge was rated as a 2! Driver collected a nice fat 13,000 dollar fine for his efforts.

I guess he ought to consider himself lucky. It might or should have collapsed.

you would be suprised at how often 60,000lb. of concrete truck are sent over 8-10 ton bridges.
-
I routinely break the bridge rating's. Sorry but I gots to go. Even if I obeyed the law where he heck am I gonna turn around.
-
Wouldn't shock me at all. But in those cases, the truck weighs 3 times the limit. In this case, the truck weighed about 9 times the limit. And if they get caught, the concrete guys can look forward to paying a hefty fine as well.
Last week I was in Kansas, traveling on a state highway over to Joplin Mo. Outside of one town was a series of bridges, all marked for 35 ton or so. I weighed more than that, but not too much. I went on ahead. there were no warning signs before the bridges, not warning at the previous crossroads. These weren't for safety as much as they were for revenue of the local county. I took a chance, but I took a chance on enforcement, not collapse. -
$13,000 fine to pay,and probably no job to help pay it.
What an idiot........ -
That Was A Werner Driver , Where's The Common Sense On This
Driver. -
I'd like to know what a guy is supposed to do.
You are rolling along a county road at 55 you round a corner and there is a bridge. No big deal except that just before your front tires go onto the bridge there is a small sign right on the bridge stating the limit at 30 tons and you are probably 42 tons. No previous warning of any kind. Not enough room to stop before the bridge and no where to turn around for miles. Just exactly what is a driver to do??????????
I agree these sorts of things are all about revenue and nothing about what the bridge can handle.
BTW that was me in my little scenario. -
burky, how about this one. had a driver, i mean idiot, got on the wrong end of a bridge job somehow, other 10 or so drivers got it right, lol. instead of going around he drives over an old covered bridge that they were replacing because it was not safe for regular auto traffic, with a ten yard load of concrete. would have been about a 25 foot fall. luckiest man i have ever seen. i think in the past 10-15 years i have seen it all.

Brickman, I have found myself in that exact situation as well, and the only choice is to grit your teeth and drive over it, assuming that the safety factor is reasonable. If it's within 75% of my weight, say 30 tons limit, then I don;t worry about it too much. But, attempting to cross a 3 ton bridge with a 40 ton unit would leave me with filled shorts and an unpleasant smell in the cab. There are limits to what I would attempt. I might have to back up for a mile, and I would make some nasty phone calls afterward to the folks responsible for marking the bridge, but I wouldn.t cross that bridge (when I come to it!).
