Kalamazoo, MI Police are searching for a small, dark-colored passenger car with damage to its passenger-side mirror, reported to have fled after striking a semi-tractor trailer driver near U.S. 131 and D Avenue this morning.

This happened a mile from my house. There are two "truck stops" at that location. Why wouldn't a driver get off the highway to check his load? Of course, there is no excuse for hit and run.

Heyns, could it possibly be there was no parking available in the truckstops? Or could it be after leaving he noticed a strap that needed a quick securing?

Either way, like you said no excuse for hit and run.

    heyns57 Thanks this.

At 0545, I doubt he could see a strap needing tightened in the dark. Plus many of the trucks are leaving truck stops starting at 0400. There's always a parking spot around that time. He been there awhile or pulled there for convenience. Just my analogy. :)

I hope they catch the sorry person. Only a coward runs. Probably drunk or driving on a suspension.

I didn't even consider the time. I wish somebody would have told all the drivers covering the J here this morning that they were supposed to be running, it was still covered at 10am.

I see guys adjusting securement on flats all over the place, I would be leery of it myself, I used to get to as secure a place as I could get to, sometimes it was stop quick and fix it before it was gone.

I don't know how many people are around the 'Zoo that are illegal, so I won't say. It was probably someone that panicked and didn't stick around to find out what they had hit, I just hope they come forward, and if not, I hope they are caught.

Having never been a flatbedder, is there not a way to ensure that your tightening mechanisms are on the right side, away from traffic (at least as much as possible)? Or is more unloading done off the right side, thereby requiring the use of the left side for adjustments?

As far as the perp....probably another low-life texting while driving....

48, ensuring that you are out of traffic is fixable. ie a rest area, a ramp shoulder, a parking lot, etc.

The Kalamazoo Gazette (12/14/12, page A3) follows up with the following news. The hit-and-run suspect has been issued a citation. The accident happened on Monday. On Tuesday, police stopped a car on the same exit ramp at about the same time as the accident. I assume the side mirror found in the ditch on Monday fits the car stopped on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old truck driver remains hospitalized. He was parked on the off-ramp when struck by a person whose name has not been released. We use this off-ramp and it becomes a wide two-lane with shoulders. It is convenient for truckers who can cross "D" Avenue directly to an on-ramp.
