I just saw a load listed on the load board paying $1700 load is 40K and you only have to go from Greenville, SC to Los Angeles, CA :biggrin_2559:

So you currently make .43cpm and only have a cell phone bill.....you should have some good money saved up by now then, unless your entertainment expense is of the two legged type ;)

If you got the money, I'd say find a good used truck for about $20k and see what you can do. If you are wanting to run coast to coast then you may want to up the truck a little but newer so maybe $40k. Make sure to have a minimum of $10k in the bank for repairs, and other costs.

Other than that, you seem to have the right attitude about it, and not having obligations will make It much easier for you to make money and chase the rates.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

I appreciate the info everyone! I've been saving most of what I've earned the last couple years so I'll heed the advice to wait until I can buy a truck outright.

It's funny how most dealers claim it's better to finance, while the drivers say to buy outright. My trust is with the drivers!!!!

Anyway, I know a lot of people on all sides of the industry and have been talking to all of them. They have been great informing me of the miles of forms and permits and laws and requirements :biggrin_2551: but I'll be doing this forever so it's worth a shot soon.

ROCKNSAND: I work for a company now that fortunately let's us run the truck as if we are operating it. I choose my own routes and fuel stops. I keep track of how many miles I average per tank as well as how much $$ I'm putting in the tank. And overall, I keep a sharp eye on everything. how often I need repairs ( we have older international models I don't care for) and how much those repairs cost. I'm not paying for any of it now but I am getting good ideas.

It's amazing how dedication to preventive maintenance can increase productivity. :biggrin_25525:

dont be a fool. do not buy from a dealer.
go to richie bros auction and get something there. thats were they buy from and add 5-10k on a truck.
google them and find a auction you can attend.

    SHC Thanks this.

Just write an honest cash flow projection and make sure you consider all the costs
like operating authority, fuel taxes, 2290, fuel costs, insurance, maintenance, truck payment, trailer, securing equipment etc.

Trucking is a profitable business. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be so many people involved. It takes good management, self control with the large gross income, patience and hard work! But i'm sure you can make it happen.

Good luck. I wish nothing but success for you!

I only say to buy a truck outright because when you hit those hard times (which you will the first year for sure) it is a lot easier to get thru when you don't have a truck note hanging over your head and it makes things much easier, such as parking the truck for a week or two if the rates get bad, fuel gets too high or god forbid, somehting breaks.

I am in the opposite boat right now, my 1st truck I bought with cash at an auction and drove it for 7 years. Now I have a small truck payment, but the company I am leased to is not doing so well and I am ready to jump ship, problem is I have a truck payment (and house, and car, and other bills) and it is going to be very tight the next few months making ends meet but with the support of a loving woman at home helps me get thru it all....... so just save up for that type of a rainy day, but you seem to be in a good position to take the leap on your own!
