I never had load locks fall. Some mess up when they use two and over tighten the second one making the first one fall. Forward motion is where all the force is. Keeping the back side standing takes minimal force.
Alot of freight by the rear door, most won't fool with because the doors keep them standing. Looking at that freight, you can tell it was unstable freight with it's rounded bottoms. I wasn't there, but probably would of used a load lock. You are not preventing the freight from falling. You are preventing the freight from starting to fall.
Like others said get in the habit the minute you release the latch that you are standing off to the left and peak in. Something like that jump back and let her fall.
What do you think would of happened if a DOT officer opened your doors?? ....Unsecured load ticket.
The most important thing is you are alright. Material things can be replaced. Freight like that you can't hurt anyways. Live and learn. You won't get hit again.![]()
Crushed by shifted load, common injury or rooky mistake?

Just thought of something.....if those pallets weighed 2500 lbs each, it wasn't loaded front to back. 20 pallets would be 50k, unless they singled a bunch.
-
Man u must b living right that could have been very bad.In thefuture, you need some straps, or load locks. those shippers dont care just get it out of our place.I pick up frt all the tiime that hasto be redone before we ship it out p'g proctor and gamble real bad about loading pallets. Those shouldn't been stacked 9ft high.
-
Agree with you for the most part, however, I pick up a lot of loads that are preloaded and already sealed...so sometimes you just have to hope you had somebody that gave a rat's behind of how they loaded that trailer. -
Thanks for the responses guys. To say the least, it was a lesson well learned. Unfortunately I haven't been able to afford any load locks but I should have at least thrown a strap on it. It was loaded out in the boonies at a small saw mill and they didn't have any means of securing it. I figured because of there weight and being so close to the doors they wouldn't be able to shift enough to offset there balance. It was a rookie mistake and I will never cut corners again. I'm just grateful no one was hurt, including my self, and no freight was really lost.
It could have been a serious incident, but thankfully it wasn't, and turned out to be a serious wake up call.
Unfortunately the doctor put me on restricted duty and unfit to drive. Schneider was kind enough to give me a bus ticket back home. I have another doctor appointment next Thursday and will find out if the radiologist finds anything with my xrays. Hopefully I will be able to return to work. -
Schneider will provide load straps and while at OC's looknear dumpster's and see if you can find any load bars lots of times they're left ontrucks and the maintenance people set them aside and you just need to keep an eye open..
oragonads Thanks this. -
So you really weren't hurt very bad at all, then your family convinces you to go to doctor, and now you can't work anymore. Sorry but we used to deal with the pain and keep going. Americans are getting so soft it's rediculous. Good luck,
-
Uhhh, no. I have a back strain, cervical strain, and thoracic sprain. I was going to tough it out but my family convinced me to go get it checked out because if you have a spine injury it can lead to serious problems down the road. I planned on getting back to work on Wednesday but the company wouldn't let me drive because the doctor put me on light duty which I can't get taken off of until my check up next Thursday. So until then I'm SOL.
-
I didn't choose not to work. The company won't let me until I'm off light duty. I just chose to get my back checked out. First time I've ever seen the doctor for an injury and because of all the BS I don't want to see one again. They wanted me to do physical therapy... Uhh, no!
-
Americans are so soft? Well why don't you head back to whatever communist hole it is you crawled out from. This guy what seriously injured and you insinuating that he's "soft" is laughable.
Oragonads... I hope you get well soon and can return to work when you are 100%.
