I can deal with either driving daytime, or night time. Given a preference, I will drive daytime. Get up early in the morning, be done early in the afternoon. Doesn't always work out like that though.

It doesn't matter if its summer or winter. When the sun goes down I get sleepy.
A friend of mine can do swing shift like it isn't even there. I'm jealous because I would run at night for the reasons mentioned if I could stay awake. -

It would take me a very long time to aclimate to all nights. Several yrs ago long before I was a trucker I did the night shift at a ranch calving. 6 nights a week. After 3 months it was better, but not easy to stay awake all night. Took another 3 months after that until I could sleep ALL night thru. I guess some of us aint cut out for shift work.

When I lived in Chicago I did the overnight shift for 6 years. 1130p.m. to 730a.m., of course I was in the Sears Tower, so I didn't need to steer a vehicle.
I loved the overnight.
I used to stop by the quick mart to grab a roadie beer on the way to the train home , and gross out the folks walking to work at 7:45 in the morning, carrying their coffee.
Sure got some funny looks. -
I would like to see the trucking industry get to a point where you could either drive day, or night. One or the other, not both. Where I have problem at night is when I have driven the day before, got a good night sleep, then get stuck waiting all day to reload. By the time the product is ready, I am ready to go to sleep, and unless I am heading back to the house with the load, going to sleep is usually what I end up doing.
That would require shippers/receiver to cater some to truckers though, and that will never happen -
just a quick reply, as for the sleeping during the day thing goes, it's not that easy, but not impossible<tells you alot, huh?> as for idleaire, it should come installed on company driver trucks, but the igniter on mine kept frying itself on the one i had back in 2004, good when it works though. at least now, most punkins have them, so don't buy your own, i had 1 truck that had one, out of the 5 different trucks i drove for schneider.

i agree, the worst factor can be waiting on a load after you unload. that usually starts a completely new time schedule for ya. and some receivers i deal with lock up from 7pm - 7am. on a good dedicated run, or drop and hook yards, you can definitely establish a more set work schedule tho!

I don't mind driving at night as long as I am not rushing along. As long as I can stop off and eat a good meal and relax along the way then I don't have the traffic to fight and I can really enjoy the drive. I would prefer to drive in the daytime though as in run from 6:30ish am to 10pm is the perfect time frame for me personally. I get my best sleep in the truck during the night time hours...
