i would say see if you can get the company your with can put you in a tractor trailer, easyer to gain the experiance needed with a company your already working for than to go to another company with no experiance and no schooling.
i got my cdl simular to how you did no school i paid for my cdl but i drove with the guy for a few days on my permit and used one of his trucks to take my test. i worked for him for 7 monthes although i had some grevences with how he conducted bissness and then used that experiance to gain the job i was just officialy hired for yesterdayRickG Thanks this. -
Very true. I'll keep at it with them and see if they can put me on a tractor trailer but like i said before, Most of the big rigs are already assigned to other drivers so it might be a long while before i can actually get into one.

Experience is experience. I've never gone OTR and so far no one has cared that all my experience was local. Obviously it goes without saying that if you have no experience, OTR is where most the job opportunities will be. But there are definitely exceptions. If local is what you want, there is no reason not to look there too. You never know. Even though you have no tractor trailer experience, you do have flatbed experience. Sometimes a company will be willing to overlook your lack of articulated experience if they know they won't have to teach you how to secure the flatbed stuff. Are there any other building supply companies in the area that might need drivers?
Craigslist is how I found my current job and the job I had before that. Both jobs were local but you can find lots of regional and OTR jobs listed on there as well. Definitely something you should be looking at every day if you're looking for a new job. Especially a local job.RickG Thanks this. -
There's other smaller building supply companies but there actually laying off drivers. I'll just rough it out for a little while longer and see if they use me for something bigger. I just want to better myself and i feel i cant better myself where im at. Im grateful i have a job but not grateful that my bills are going up and not my paychecks. I guess you gotta have some of the good with the bad.
Ive always been told to aways keep your options open but in a way its kinda hard to do so when your lacking on a certain trade. -
Would any of those drivers be willing to alternate with you a couple of times a week?

You'll spend several thousand dollars at trucking school to make several thousand less than you're making now . It has been said time after time all CDL schools do is qualify you to get a CDL . You already have it .
You'd be better off going to expedite companies in a straight truck . -
A lot of drivers were "grandfathered" back in the 80's they didn't even have to take a skills test, just a written exam, and were given a class A cdl, there are company that will hire you without going to school.
