you need to record miles not just for IFTA but also for IRP apportionment. Check with the state you will get your plate and IFTA sticker in, as each state can have different reporting requirements. Some accept GPS miles, others require a paper document for each day or trip with actual odometer readings at each state line. Audits can be done, are are done, of individual truck owners (leased or own authority) and penalties are much higher than you can imagine. They know drivers don't care about paperwork and most ignore it, so we make ourselves easy targets for fines and penalties. If you don't have the paperwork the state will estimate your miles for you, and don't expect that to work out in your favor.

Also miles in some states need to be reported for mileage taxes like NY, KY, NM and I think OR.

I checked with a state auditor to see if I could use mapquest or pcmiler. I was told that I could use pcmiler as long as I also had a gps. Otherwise, I needed to write down the odometer reading as I crossed a state line. I think that I may have mentioned about knowing a carrier that had a number of owner operators who were leased to them that only put down their miles. The carrier was fined and told that they must have owner operators put down the odometer reading.

The guy who does my IFTA reporting for me has trip sheets that I use that I put the miles and fuel on, fax it to him. He sends it to me at the end of each quarter and I send it in to the state.
