MikeyB, you say you've got some retail experience with P & L's. As you go through your driving day, figure out everything that's being spent and saved and do your own P&L. Do you have a good idea how you're going to get $1,000 each week to pay for the truck and related expenses? Can you afford the fuel for the route you have to run? What about that maintenance reserve? How will you buy 4 or 6 tires when they're needed? Do you even know how much ONE costs? What about all those lights outside and the stickers on your tractor? How about the QC costs? Do you know what the state fuel tax rate is for each of the states you run in today and how to break them down? How do you pay the IRS what it wants and when? How DO you pay the states their fuel tax? How are you going to make all these payments when you want to take a vacation? Do you know how to retain an attorney, accountant, and bookkeeper who are experienced in this industry and how to guide them so they don't hang you out to dry at the end of your tax year?

Do all that and see what you come up with at the end of a month or so. Then see if you can afford to eat, pay for your son's medical bills, the house expenses, and maybe a Christmas gift or two.

Go into it with your eyes open, my friend, and not just your ears filled with the Big Bucks Talk from a recruiter. You can make good money. And you can just as easily lose more than your shirt.

Hey MikeyB. I hope you are doing well on the road. Whether you become an O/O or L/O is up to you. I do sincerely believe IP, ORD and DD are not trying to talk you out of leasing but rather things to consider IF and WHEN you do become an O/O or L/O.

I know nothing about running a business but I do know the markets. I believe the U.S. economy will grow slightly in 2012 but unemployment will still hover near 9%. Because the U.S. is almost forever tied into a global economy starting a business is very risky these days considering: the U.S. owes 15 trillion dollars, the European economy is in the tank and cannot come to a consensus on how to manage their debt, Iran is building a nuke, N. Korea rearing it's ugly head, and the list goes on and on with world events.

The banks and other major corporate entities are stock piling cash and assets rather reinvesting back into the U.S. economy and until they do I would suggest holding on to my money. I never liked playing follow the leader with regards towards money, however for the near future I think we should. That's my two cents.

well today was the first day of now on my truck jorney. i will honestly say i though ok no problem just drive a little slower than usual. got into ohio. what the hell are these people thinking a total of 21 accident scenes. probably every accident had at least 3 cars or trucks involved. around 7pm this evening was the worst . about 6 vehicles and two trucks involved. gridlock traffic for 1hr and 45 minutes so decieded to get at the next exit which had a flying J and called it a nite. while here we went and ate at dennys and find out highway going east bound got shut down. talk about luck. im glad we are safe for the nite.

LOL being from Ohio, I can shed some light. Ohioans undergo a brain dump every year on how to drive. Right about the time of the 1st snow or ice storm or even super heavy rain. I swear it seems like they do. You must have been traveling on I71 as that is the worst. Good luck, and stay safe
