That's gods that you are getting 100%loads seat time...but is the trainer sitting in co chair or is he running you as a team? This makes a big difference for those doing research. Most trainees do not get the training they need if they are basically learning on their own to the benefit of the trainer and the company.
I totally agree with wanting to make sure you can do it all on your own BEFORE you finish training. That was my theory too. Problem is, this is an ongoing learning experience job. Trainers, whether they know it or not, do not do us favors by handling the little "problems" that arise during our time with them. It seems so smooth in training but jet as soon as you are on your own you will realize it's not that easy.
As for home every weekend, I guarantee that the "old timers" will tell you at least 2I things about this

Red, my trainer, at least the most recent one, is ALWAYS on the passenger side. He doesn't do team even if it means he doesn't get home on time. That's what I wanted during my training. He usually lets the little problems almost bite me in the ##### before correcting them. But of course there have been times thus far that he screwed up on directions or misread an address or something that led to a few extra miles trying to get turned around, which is additional experience I will need too. The problem is this guy never makes mistakes the way he tells it.
I agree that this will be an ongoing learning experience. I don't care how long you drive. I have already realized that it's not an easy job and I'm already starting to get pre-game jitters so to speak. People don't realize how much other stuff we have to do in a day. The driving is the smallest part it seems like.
Give me two more weeks and if you see a white Epes truck that looks lost or about to do something stupid blow the big horn and point me in the right direction. lol -
Just a tip, keep your cb on as much as possible. I work up here in PA, and having recently moved from Florida it has been an overwhelming experience but I know my way around pretty good now. Thursday of this past week I saw a Cargo Transporters truck reading off of his note pad; I had a good idea he was going to Leetsdale industrial park, just as I thought this he merged in to the left lane.
Now you used to turn left to go to the industrial park, but they recently built a flyover bridge that allows you to merge off to the right and then enter the park with a left turn over the bridge. Obviously this guys directions were a little off so I hollered for him on the cb and sure enough he answered. I asked if he was looking for something, he replied "yes, the industrial park", so I told him you're in the wrong lane just get in behind me and I'll get you in there.
I guarantee I saved this guy quite a bit of time, but he also saved himself some time by being a repsonsible driver and monitoring his radio, this saved him a lot of hassle; trying to turn around in PA can be a pain.
So keep the radio up, turn it down when the BS fires up, but otherwise keep an ear out, you never know when someone might realize you're in a pickle and offer a helping hand. The Challenger Thanks this. -
good deal there driver, sounds like he had the old directions in the qc.nothing like a little help.good job.
-
Good deal, thats part of the problem now a days guys don't help each other out like they use to. But then again alot of guys don't pay attention and don't know how to read road signs and there is one that says leetsdale to the right. But thats cool that you help him.
We need more guys on the road like you.The Challenger Thanks this. -
Thanks everybody! My last trainer would turn his cb on if we got into heavy traffic on an interstate and then kept it turned down most of the time. I just bought my cb this weekend. Now I need a truck to put it in! haha
I know I'm going to get laughed at for making rookie mistakes and that's ok. But I also believe there are truckers out there that will be willing to offer help when I need it too. -
dont sweat it driver most of us had that yellow rookie stripe. the rest of the steering wheel holders was born with CDL. you will learn just dont get in hurry rushing and make a mistake. the longer you do it better you get. always be watching ahead and for a way out if something happens. whats funny is for me i can pick a 4wheeler out and tell you what hes fixing to do "usually something stupid" my boy just freaks out how you know he was going to that dad lol.

Well, not making excuses for your trainer, but training in a tough business, Im sure he is doing the best he can, and I"m sure Epes only hires the best. You know my trainer I did not always see eye to eye, but to this day we still speak each week........ 3 years later. Its funny how we develop a bond under stress.
