Getting plenty of wheel time now. Theres a turn im not sure i can make yet, it leads tothe plant which is across from the walmart so you can imagine. Not much room and busy with traffic. Came close to going in a ditch yesterday, know not to take that short cut again lol, getting experience in all aspects atleast. Got a couple questions though. Is there a trick to shifting smooth in low gears? I can do the high range fine but for some reason 4th and 5th are a little rough. Also when i go for my road test, do i have to start in 1st or do what im comfortable with or what gear is needed for the situation?

I run the same setup on a tank. When running on fairly level I go 2nd to 4th to 6th,7,8,9,10. If you gotta use all the lower gears short shift em rather than wind em out.

The lower the RPM's are when you shift the easier you will find it. So just upshift through all the gears as quickly as possible without bogging the motor down. This also saves fuel. The more you tach out the RPM's the longer you have to wait to drop her in the next gear. Very rarely will you ever start off in first gear. Maybe loaded on a hill or something. 2nd or 3rd gear should be fine. (on a 10-13 speed).
WpgEagleEye and reptij Thank this. -
I usually start in 4th sometimes 3rd if it wants to roll back some. Its an eaton 10-speed

Update. Things are going good. Fairly good with shifting now. Trainer say I'm doing real good, so that's a good sign. Average about 1-200 miles a day but I only do half the driving. Started night driving, its not as bad as I thought but not easy either.

for starting on hills no hand break needed just start in your lowest gear so you dont have to give it any fuel to get rolling, 1 foot on service breaks one on clutch start letting out the clutch as you hit the friction point take your foot off the break pedal and let the clutch the rest of the way out at the same time, move your foot over to the fuel pedal and away you go.
as a matter of fact i never give it any fuel while letting the clutch out just let the tq of the motor get you rolling if you cant do this your starting in too high of a year and cauing unnessisary clutch wear.
for shifting threw the low side of the trans dont rev the motor as high very little fuel is needed to get you threw the low side. the low side of the transmision is just to get you rolling once you hit the high side you can start putting the fuel too it. -
