Im ask because i was thinking about doing one of the classes. i have had my permits for a while now. i have been doing some driving with a friend who has a few trucks. i know that the cdl mills offer a person a chance to get some experience at the cost of poverty rates. and to have you locked into a contract. should or would you do the cdl mill if you know that your are going to run you own show? i have been researching this for a while now and i know that i will be an o/o. i have even taken classes on brokerage so i could learn how to broker my own loads. i have a truck that i purchased and have been slowly rebuilding it so when i get my own authority i wont have to many problems (fingers crossed) just trying to keep cpm down as much as possible when i hit the highway

If you are going to hit the road yourself, how you get your CDL is really not that important. I know several people that used the company schools to get CDL with intention of never driving for that company because what that school charged back was cheaper than what a local school was PLUS it was only three weeks vs. three months.

I still believe that getting training with a trainer OTR is valuable I would suggest that you take advantage of that nightmare so that you are not just hitting the road with zero road time.

If you've been driving already, get some serious practice doing pre trip by the book and the range maneuvers and get on over to Jackson and test out. Last I heard, appointments were being scheduled 2-3 wks out so don't wait to call and set it up (presuming that your friend will go with you in one of his trucks to test).

bill thanks for your input i was thinking that maybe hitting the road on someone elses equipment and getting a little money wouldnt be to bad after all it will also give me a little time to finish my kw w900 also. maybe when im ready the freight rates will increase i had been checking and some of the brokers are insane with what there offering

LITTLE is the key word. Last I checked, while training you are getting paid like $50/day. Just think of it as part of the cost of getting into a very profitable business.

The high level of accidents in the first year of driving are more attitude related than skill.

I never went to school, passed the written exams, passed the driving, CDL in hand.

BUT, you have to have a job lined up doing it that way.
