Did you charge him for detention time? I would have made him sign for detention, and upon his refusal I'd a went over his head and had some one sign a load refused and left. Never let them think they have one over on you.

So i just pulled up to my final, this place up in canadiagua, NY. And my Appt was for 10 AM. and i got there at 9 AM.

So i give her by bills, and she looks at me like i did something wrong and says "you appt is at 10." and I said, "yea, that's only an hour from now!"

You can't seriously expect people to show right at their appt time, cuz then you would be late.

she said to come back 15 mins before 10, becuase they were really busy.

Its like they are mad that I'm here an hour early. I bet the would be ever more pissed if i was an hour late.

It's kinda hard to arrive here right at 10 when you have a 7 hr drive to get here.

 

More and More receivers and shippers are like this. "Get our product here on time, wait until we are ready to undload/load you and then get the HELL OUT"
Get use to this, it's every where. And the attitude as well...

 

The people here at Safeway in Tracy ca man got the bedside manner of a po'd crocodile . You would figure if they hate there job that much they would find somewhere they would be happier .... Just sayin

 

Seems to me that the Grocery loads are the ones that are total ##### Holes about receiving anything. HE BUTTS in Texas... You can only arrive 15 minutes before and DONT even think about showing up anything over 5 minutes past your scheduled time. There is a list of BANNED DRIVERS on their security wall... I almost was one of those names. I got into some REAL bad traffic in Tyler TX and it caused me to be 8 minutes late for my 5PM LIVE UNLOAD... I was told I had 5 minutes to leave their property after calling to RE SCHEDULE an appointment. They sure had no problem charging $350.00 lumper fee though. I am glad that my company pays lumper fees... I sure as heck am NOT un loading these trailers for the $15.00 they will pay you.

 

i got banned from anshiser-busch in columbus, ohio.

It was july, and i had been driving for a week without ac. and i was loosing my mind it was so hot. I showed up there and after a few hours of waiting to get loaded i just about lost it.
I think the heat was just getting to me. after the door my trailer was in had a green light i went and hooked up to it, and tried to leave. But they turned me around at the guard shack because i was supposed to let a yard dog pull it out of the door.

So I sped back to the office, and went inside and he was all pissed off, and took the load away from me. So i said "well, F you too" and dropped the trailer and took my mt back and left.

dispatch called up later and said i was banned from there, but they were not too mad at me. maybe they should have gotten my #### AC fixed!! before i went mad

 

They wouldn't be more pissed that you were late, they wouldn't take you. I hauled groceries for years. And like anywhere else, you have certain receivers that are jerks and others that are cool.

Grand Union in Waterford, NY (long since shut down), were complete a-holes. The receiving boss had been assaulted a few times and drivers went to jail for it. And he thrived on it.

Same deal - I had a Colgate load I picked up in Jersey City and ran 5 minutes late because of an accident in rush hour traffic in Albany NY - just a fluke, and the Grand Union receiver refused the load after I politely explained to him what happened. Shook his head, basically said, "Tough ****" and sent me on my way.

He thought we were a Jersey based carrier. We weren't - the yard was 15 minutes away, and we had extra trailers. Called the broker, explained the situation and then told them to let us know when to reschedule the load. And that's when it got fun, because we had a bunch of work to do - it was the 80's and we were busy. So we got downright impossible when it came to find a time that would work. Sat on the load for over 10 days and it was kind of funny, because Grand Union now wanted the product.

Day 10 showed up 5 minutes late on purpose and lo and behold - got a door. And this was back in the day when we got a quote from the lumper and then said we would do it for the same price, and billed the broker for it.

This is one of the biggest problems with grocery hauling I know of. So your company will pay $350 clams to someone who is providing more than likely a bogus SS# and not paying the taxes, plus com data fees or however they transfer the money, and they will pay you a whopping $15 ??



I used to lump my freight whenever I could, unless the receiver made it next to impossible by not letting you use the equipment, etc. And I had an OSHA Forklift Certification in my back pocket, so they couldn't play that card. Sometimes, they would say, "Well, it's not OUR certification, so it's not valid on our dock." And if I couldn't use a hand jack, then I would have to suck it up and hire the lumper.

But I would do it for next to or slightly less than the lumpers would charge. I used to haul Wendy's napkins to Sygma in Harrisburg, Pa and lump my own loads. Took me 3 hours of busting my butt, and I collected $150, from my company. The lumpers charged $200, only took ComChek and typically took 4-5 hours. So I was able to turn the load faster, and make $50 an hour for my dock time, and my dispatcher didn't have to fiddle around with getting money at 2AM.

I miss that gig. I could just about turn that run in 14, made around $400 for the day driving a company truck. Too bad the company went belly up, because I never would have moved on.

Anyhoo, the next time your dispatcher says, "We'll pay you $15, but we'll pay them $350, I would retort with....."

"How about $275, and I'll put on my work gloves now?"

Productive day, eh?

I understand you we're hot and miserable, and how that can wear you down. However, I know how AB works, and I'm sure there was some form of instructions that you didn't comprehend somewhere in the process.

So, instead of speeding back to the office, and I'm sure charging in there all overheated and I would have to guess, pretty furious/upset, do you think you would have been pulling that load of beer if you had been in a little calmer frame of mind?

I've seen it happen 100 times. I've worked in warehouses and filled in when needed at different gigs along the way, and I have never seen a driver have a tantrum and get his way.

When I was younger, I rubbed people the wrong way too. I could always find a reason to justify it, but it never accomplished anything. I do understand that it doesn't take much to take an over-tired and frustrated driver to push him over the edge.

And I'm sure it wasn't a gold star for you. Your company had to re-power the load and I'm sure your day didn't improve from there.....

12 hours to unload mangos, attitudes like always, +5 1/2 hours at the drivers pen waiting for a door(Required CB and did not want to burn up inside the cab) + 1 1/2 hours waiting for a USDA Inspector to clear the fruit.

3 hours to unload 3 desks, thats right DESKS. Being cussed at pretty loudly as if we were not there IN FRONT OF THEM!, Tight place to park and move.

Dropped off ONE DESK, got lost in the lions den of Pittsburgh, rude female police officer came running at us when we turned left at Oakland to see if we had hit a car(no car thankfully), said that why are Texans Dumb***** and cant read directions_1PIRATES7. Delivery Place, ON THE ONE WAY STREET!!! Getting out was also a PITA!!!
Talk about being rude to someone they dont even know...
