Hey i am going to school to get my cdl but been around trucking all my life and we have two trucks right now but i was thinking about buying me a truck and pulling logs but dont know if it is a good time to start pulling logs because of the mills and all. Also is the per ton loaded mile still .12 cent or what thanks. or what would yal think would be something good for me to do to start out doing.

I don't have any log hauling experience, but I hauled wood chips for quite a while with Pritchett Trucking, going to Rock Tenn in Panama City, GP in Cedar Springs, and Buckeye in Perry. The constant that I noticed is the restrictions constantly put on the driver, they're wide open for a few weeks at a time and then they'll put you on quota. Some weeks you can bring in untrimmed logs, then they want you trimming them. Some weeks you can unstrap in the parking lot, some weeks they want you unstrapping at the loader.

I don't know that there's much money to be made doing it. I know as a company driver hauling wood products I wasn't compensated all that well, but that's the norm for the area. i would think with the right business sense you could make a decent living, but I certainly wouldn't expect to get rich.

Make sure your truck is up to par, they'll take a beating in the woods, and Florida and Georgia DOT will take a beating on you on the highways if you're truck is not in good mechanical working order, log trucks and rock trucks are the first ones to get busted and picked on down in those areas.
