yea, I can just imagine a catering truck in -45 temps.
What are you going to sell? Ice cream?
Open your doors and five minutes later everything is frozen.
People that don't know cold, are ripe for pickin'!

I think all car haulers out there should park their trailers & buy oil field stuff immediately to cash in on all the N.D. money. No worries, I will stay here in the midwest & south doing the poor boy work. ;)

The money you hear about up there definitely gets your attention. But that cold, the unknown of day to day & the whole man camp thing brings it all back to reality for me.

I experienced two days in -10 degrees back in the early nineties when I just turned 20 that was effing brutal! I couldn't even begin to imagine -40 degrees for six weeks straight... those guys that do it have my respect.

I appreciate all of the response. I am still undecided. I met with a friend who went up last week. He is still undecided too. It appears that the days of being able to get all the work you want just by being there are gone for now. Probably still a lot of opportunity, but not the no-brainer that it was.

He also said that it looked like the oil companies will be renegotiating the major contracts next month and will probably go to a price/barrell rather than an hourly rate. I think I will probably wait and see if that happens and see what the ramifications are.

speaking as one who has been up there hauling oil most regular trucks will do fine as in terms of the oil field the locations up there are Cadillac compared to most
but your right about getting one fixed had to schedule your PM about a month out there was a guy living in his service truck in killdeer making a killing just doing flats

but as for making a killing up there ya might but those squirrels hold on to there nuts pretty tight and don't forget $ 15 for a pork chop you can see thru

I did some time and came home

and ya might find this of interest as I was cleaning off my desk and found an old rate sheet 3.41 a bbl for a 60 mile haul and 3.89 for a 135 mile haul
