An air mattress will save his back. I have a $30 Coleman twin-size from walmart that I replace every year on warranty after the valve wears out. Add the $15 12v pump and it's $50 well-spent. Can't stress how bad truck mattresses are. Just put the air mattress right over it.
Perhaps a gift certificate to Sunglass Hut. Quality eyewear that's comfortable and optically correct will help reduce fatigue and vision impairment.
Satellite radio! Most value-packed subscription service on the planet. Endless entertainment and news wherever he travels.
A good pair of gloves. I prefer split leather with fleece lining. Durable and warm.
Travel bag / toiletry kit. Gotta be able to grab everything and run in for a quick shower at the truck stop.

I have a coleman cooler. It will keep things cold enough. Not as good as a proper fridge but good enough for the price it cost.

"...what kind of 5th wheel"...what do you mean...brand, design???
I'm a newbie going to Central's school in a couple of weeks.
Thanks.

There are different brands and designs of 5th wheels. Older tractors had different release handles than the ones you see on trucks today.

invest in a real fridge.not the ones you see in the truckstops that hardly holds anything and cost a small fortune.i found a 40 qt that can b used either as a cooler or a fridge because it has a digital temp setting.i keep my fridge at 37 and my freezer at 0.it's also ac/dc and can b plugged into the cig. lighter plug.about $400. each with shipping.a small mirowave,a george foreman grill, and a butane burner are also nice to have.

I will also say it is a good idea to have some non-persihable emergency food stowed away in the truck. I assume everyone is like me and always has enough bottled water to last several days. My emergency rations when there's nothing else consists of a couple dozen vacuum packed 3.5oz starkist tuna, Vienna Saugages, beanie weenies, etc It's not much, but it's better than nothing to eat at all when the fridge runs out if you are stranded somewhere for a length of time.

I've been at this racket a long time. My biggest thing is to not waste money while on the road. I remember when I was spending $150 a week on the road. The food is disgusting, With the advent of APU's, inverters, and affordable cooking equipement, like a microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and minimally keeping a stocked truck, I now spend less than $25 per week while gone. Case in point, this last 3 week round. Left the house with enough home cooked food and dry goods that lasted me until I got home. Total spent, $80. I did eat a steak out at the Big Texan in Amarillo and got a buffet dinner in Winnemucca. Oh, I did have to stop at a Walmart to buy some bagged lettuce and milk.

That is a great place to eat in Amarillo.
