Nope, I completely agree that being able to drive those transmissions is a talent. Where the wheels fall off is the assumption that ANYONE will be willing to pay you more for that talent. No one and I mean no one cares a lick whether you can shift a super 10. All anyone cares about is whether or not the freight got where had to go on time. That's it. If you want to shift a super 10 while doing it, knock yourself out, but don't expect me or anyone else to pay you extra simply because you can do it.
I enjoy shifting heavy transmissions and I think I'm pretty darn good at it. But now that I'm in an auto, I don't miss shifting like I thought I would. In fact, I don't miss it at all. Not one bit. Its still a truck. It still takes skill to drive. And quite frankly, the auto makes it an absolute pleasure.
There are still tons of manual trannys in the world so any and all students would be well advised to learn manual transmissions. But the writing is on the wall and the day will come within my lifetime when 90% of truck drivers on the road will never have seen a manual transmission much less have any idea how to shift one. Like it or hate it the truth is the truth. As for payscales, the number of qualified drivers vs the number of available jobs has far more impact on payscales than transmission type ever will.pearcetrucking Thanks this. -
What would be considered a new generation ultrashift? I'm looking at a 07 Pete 386 with a ultrashift and a isx 450hp cummins but the one thing I'm still worried about is the ultrashift and having never driven one I don't know if I will like it and can't afford any problems for a while. Whats you guys' opinions?

their are three gen's of the auto shift 1st gen had clutch peddle (good), gen #2 untrashift (no clutch peddle) also call a dm2 05-09..? most are good but you may find a bad one (computer, x-y shifter) gen #3 untrashift dm3 RUN AWAY. this trans was so bad that us xpress stopped getting auto's because of them, all auto shift trans do have a clutch (even without the peddle) if it goes out it's about $500 more to fix, we have the gen2 untrashift and love it.

Ok thanks flood for the info man, much appreciated.

your a little wrong on your descriptions here. All generations of Autoshift have a clutch peddle, an autoshift is a manual trans that is controlled by a computer. Ultrashift, I-shift, M-drive (Mack proprietary) are automatics without a clutch peddle. The other part, yes they all have some sort of clutch built-in.

if you look at the pic's sure looks like the SAME BOX and gee look all have a clutch
they all use a X-Y computer controled shifter, the auto shift is the only one with a clutch peddle the others have a computer controled clutch -
Just picked up a 2012 cascadia, plus ultra shift daycab 10spd 1200mi and not sure what to think as only driven empty with tank wagon back from dealer in oklahoma.
Comes equipped with single one hundred gal fuel tank. Setup for 80k gvw
driven with the auto shift/clutch pedal before, liked that immensely
this setup is kinda shift on the column and go,noticed theres a manual option slide button on lever. Hows this new version going to respond on hills and such loaded at highway speeds and elevations? Mpg overall? Be basically loaded one way(200+mi) then return empty same distance.working partner said model last yr or so just did not work over in eastern oregon, got rid of them all. Went back to 13od transmissions.
Appreciate any do's or don'ts suggestions generally on this ultra shift supposed new better version.
