Hunts Point Coop, Bronx. Advice>..

I was there in 2001. Had to be very careful getting in because of the traffic but once you got in and got into a dock it was not so bad. No worse than any other big city produce market, just a lot more trucks coming and going. But the first time backing in is a nightmare. I think all new drivers should have to go at least once.....

 

I really don't know exactly what time period Hunt's Point was like a war zone. I don't know if Giuliani cleaned it up or if that was just somebody's guess.

Yes the docks are tight, they put the curbs too close to the docks so you don't have much room to maneuver. But I've seen much worse.

 

Hunt's Point was like a war zone , that was a good way of describing it.

Tame today but still the surrounding area is crime riddled and a good place to stay oput of.

 

As long as you can get in to the market and park......and get unloaded......it was not that bad. Sleeping on the street was bad, way unsafe when I ran up there. Don't know how it is now and don't want to find out.

 

They're usually good paying loads going in there. The reason is nobody can get their drivers to go there, or ANYWHERE in NYC, so shippers have to pay more.

 

I have all GOOD PAYING loads and do not have to go near NYC anymore.

 

Well that's good. But a lot of us just have to take what we can get these days. There's plenty of good paying loads that don't require NYC though.

 

TO STOCKTONHAULER:

LOVED the post about truck parking and the NY subway. I thought I was super clever last week when I found fabtastic parking in Elizabeth, but even though I could take public trans. to NY from there, I wanna follow your guidelines on visiting NY from Hunts Point. Maybe soon!

And, hey. I live in San Francisco. If you have *ANY* freaking idea where to park near there, I'd LOVE to hear from you. You know, there's a scale every 25 feet in this state (I think I ran across four of them coming from Escondido in the last 24 hours), and yet, with all that money spent on "commercial vehicle safety," the government has never thought to throw a single dime at creating a patrolled truck-parking lot for anybody. How is it helping safety when nobody can park and go to sleep when their 11 hours are up!?!? (LET ALONE GO HOME!)

Fenced in, Security, Actually QUIET.

Even has local food delivery right to your truck.
(the chinese place is GOOD)

I love when this post is brought back from the dead. All I can say is Hunts Point can be tough for some people, for others like myself, it's not an issue at all. Especially when you grew up going to work with your dad in the 60's and 70's to the family produce business in, where else? Hunts Point Market. It's an oasis today compared to 30-45 years ago.

To this day whenever I go through the big city, if I have time, I will stop off and visit some family members at the Point.
