So, I'm just getting into trucking and I just received the following as a Christmas gift:

    Cobra 29 LX CHR LE
    Astatic 636L-C

Are there modifications, additions, amps, etc. that I need to get, or have done to this radio to be have a decent setup for trucking use?

If so, what should I get, or have done, and where should I get it or have it done?

Thanks a bunch and Merry Christmas!!

i have a 29 but but not the chrome one. i added an echo board, talkback, dual mosfet finals, and my supertune thats around 30 watts. thats all i need for that setup. you dont need an amp. and most people on here will try to talk you out of it. at least thats what happened to me when i asked about amp advise. thats a good radio though. it will hold up very well in a big truck. it will deff take the abuse.

just have the radio tuned by a trusted tech. maybe look into getting a small texas star 350 or so, if your tractor will run while using the amp LOL

get a good antenna, I.E. browning, K40 or Wilson trucker, or an expensive monkeymade. the browning BR28 is one i ran for a long time and it had a 15000 watt max. all the ones i listed are great antennas, but remember the basic rule. you can have a 300 dollar radio and mic, a nice big amp, but with a 2 dollar truck stop special antenna, you have a 2 dollar radio setup.

The radio should be fine out of the box, you just need a decent antenna and a proper installation and you will be good to go.If you have a bottomless wallet, don't waste your $$$ on a "peak and tune", donate it to a charity.

So, does that mean that you have 30 watts of transmitting power after those mods?

Can you recommend a good radio shop that can do all that stuff for me?

Also what would I be looking at cost wise?

Any recommendation for a "trusted tech"?

As for the antenna(s), I'll have to wait until I have my own assigned truck and determine what I can/can't change/add to it.

I'm in Northeast Mississippi, but I was hoping someone could recommend a honest, reliable radio shop that I could ship the radio to and trust that they'd mod it as it should be and be honest in their pricing, etc.

Both are excellent shops. Or for starters just get a little KL-203 amp for $50 from H&Y. You then will have over 100 watts output for about the price to a peak job.
