I just had a friend talk to UPS freight and they told him pay was .90cpm plus fsc which is currently .43cpm for a total of $1.33pm all miles and it was terminal to terminal. I think he is actually thinking of doing it. I guess they also told him he would get around .20 off a gallon off the pump price using their discount and their insurance rates were like $145/month and $7/wk for bobtail.

Ya I was kinda thinking the same thing, kinda sounds like 30 years ago money or even older. I thought those guys would pay better then that. I told him he needs to give Landstar a call, even if he does live by me south of Tampa he would just have to haul a cheapy to get out of Florida then he could make some good money with Landstar. I might be wrong but I know several guys running for Landstar that love it.

So what would be a reasonable rate for being an O/O but not your own authority? Like with Landstar or whatever.

There is no such thing as a "reasonable rate". Rates change by lane, date and by season. No one in the spot market can say that they make X dollars per mile all the time. Decide what you want to haul, from where to where and look up the lane rates. Try to negotiate for something on the high side of average. For example it's stupid to say "I'm not leaving southern Cali for less than $2.50 a mile" if the lane rates to your desired destination or the load destination average $1.70. You may eventually get your rate but odds are that you'll lose a ton of productivity in the process. A lot depends on where you live and how often you want to get home. I'm from Florida and we generally need to make minimum 3, 4 or more leg runs to make money and achieve our averages and stay out longer than say someone from Illinois who can make a 2 or 3 leg run. Get sharp at load and lane selection and you can say I make $2.20 a mile average, or whatever the number is. You get the point.
