Well, after my fall out with jb hunt i've been hired this week by a small co with only 15 tractors to it's fleet. I explained on what happened at jb hunt and why i quit there last week. The owner put me through all the dot stuff and backround checks in one 15 hour day. He also paid me $300 bonus after i gave em my dmv print out. He then called me that afternoon asking if i wanted a load to seattle that was leaving the same night. I said hell yea. Well, he's going to pay me according to how much each load pays him. He says it's typically about 350-400 for the driver and will avg around 700-800 weekly. Taxes will be filed on a 2290. The truck is a 2000 freightliner that's well maintained since he's a certified mechanic as well. Also been trucking for 15 years. His company incorporated for eight years. Has a huge shop with his two brothers as mechanics and some other relatives as drivers. I have no idea how i just ran into this fellow and he just happened to be looking for a driver. Anyway, the job looks promising and hopefully it's a lasting one. The company is A&E transport out of hemet ca.

$700/$800 a week, paid on a 2290, obviously NO benefits or insurance how great is that! It must have been that $300 bonus that swayed you huh?

Hey at least he is working. It's very frightening to be unemployed especially when your concerned that a company will probably blackball your DAC.

Happy for you driver hope it works out well

I am hoping to get on with a small 20 some truck company up here in NorCal. No benefits/insurance. But I already have those so it is not a problem. He is probably in the same shape.

Insurance benefits are a joke anymore anyway. Why would I want to pay someone $35 a week ($1800 a year) so that I can pay $2500 more in deductibles ($4300 total) before they cover ANYTHING. And then God forbid you are in an accident and are eligible for a settlement. By law the insurance company can reimburse themselves 100% from that settlement. Even though you paid for their service.
Enjoy the new job. It's hard to find good jobs and I will no longer work for the large companies. Even though I pull FedEx, I work for a contractor with 9 trucks. I love small companies.

OK I'm probably just OLD and I'm missing something here. I've heard of being paid on a "1099" never a "2290".

On a 1099 you are being paid as a sub-contractor. YOU are responsible for ALL your own taxes and social security. 800 bucks may seem like something, pay all that is owed to the Gov. at the end of the week and see how "well" you did.

Fall behind on those taxes and see how the Government makes Vinney the loan shark look like a cub scout.

I don't know your tax filing status but mine usually falls somewhere right around 25% (single-no dependents- claiming 0)

$800 means your actual pay is around 600.

In these times I know a job is a job but paying someone on a 1099 benefits the company not the driver.

Think about this, if it were the way to pay, EVERYONE would pay this way.

Ok. I'll explain. No benefits/insurance. Claiming 5. A 2290 is an account you have set up with the irs. Your employer files quarterly. You pay out yearly. I fall under a 12% tax bracket with my four kids and non working wife. If i make $3000 a month, i'll pay $320 in taxes wich goes streight into my savings account (in case i owe) BUT, since i won't be making over 50,000 next year i won't pay uncle sam a dime. Why you ask? It's federal law. My insurance is paid through the state of california and so are my families. I'll be banking about 2800 a month. Let me just add that this company requires at least 2 years otr truck driving exp.
