You don't need an echo board and talkback, if you want that, go to Toys R Us and buy a "Mr. Microphone", save that money for a nice external speaker. Just have it tuned, get a good antenna and leave it alone.

If you need to talk 15 miles, get a cell phone.

So, do I need to have anything done to the radio if I'm going to get the KL-203?

You did say "Or for starters", so does that mean to buy the KL-203 INSTEAD OF, or IN ADDITION TO, having the radio "tuned", etc.?

    Thanks!

Don't waste your money on having any modifications done to your radio. Those who spend money on echo and other modifications make it next to impossible for anyone to hear what they are saying. They get upset at those who can't understand them after they spent all that money. Leave it the way it is now. Use it for a while and if you still think you need something done to it there are plenty of shops around the country who will take you money. Very few people even talk on the CB any more. You will probably use it more at shippers to check in and communicate with them than any other time. Save your money for something you really need in your truck, such as a cooler/refrigerator, microwave or toaster. Those can save you money and enable you to eat better and for less money than wasting money on things you don't need on a radio.

How about the skip-shooters? This last week, out around McPherson to Lyons I pick up someone from downtown Boston, Mass. He comes in so loud that I can hardly dial him out so I can hear my shipper. On top of that there's been some idiot going on with the auuu--di-oooo.

Our company drivers do talk to each other when running together or meeting on the road. Most of the time we use a channel that we call our company channel.

I will volunteer a bear/DOT report, especially in certain areas where they have a reputation of being ruthless, out to get the truck driver. Heck I'll give one location right now. Chase, KS, on U-56 hwy. There's a new bear that likes that small town. It has a reduced speed limit of 50mph, and is a spit in the road, but makes for a good speed trap. A couple of weeks ago, as I was EB out of Great Bend, there was a flatbed behind me. He wasted no time in passing, and took off like he lit the afterburners. Well I was told by another one of our drivers that this bear was setup in Chase. So I changed to Ch 19, hollered at the flatbedder to warn him. Guess he didn't have his radio on, I seen him and the bear visiting as I went by. He also must have had to stand on the brakes, there was a nice set of black marks on the pavement. Sometimes having a CB on, just listening could pay off... just sayin... :biggrin_25525:

Thanks for the advice. Those other appliances are definitely more important than a radio!!

A 29 with a good peak and tune, noise cancelling mic, good coax and antenna, is hard to beat and will more than suffice for most drivers. If I wanted echo and all that, I would just get an export radio. If I was gonna get an export radio, I would get one with dual finals, unless I was gonna run a linear all the time, then a single final radio would be O.K.! Confused???:biggrin_2559:
I've picked up my export radios from guys that needed money, were getting out of trucking, or they didn't work, and I got them pretty cheap (except one) or I probably wouldn't have them and would still be running a 29 or a 25. You get your antenna set up right and your 29 will work great!

I can't see paying for a lot of extra's for a CB since people rarely talk on them anyway. One of the best radios that I owned was a Cobra 19. I think that I still have the radio and it should still work. I usually use my Uniden 68. I have a Radio Shack radio in another truck. It is also a good radio. I have had it for many years. They no longer make Radio Shack CB's as far as I know. Any of them will do the job. I prefer Cobra, but I got a good deal on my Uniden. It has several weather bands which do come in handy. I have had a couple of other Cobra radios over the years that I have bought from drivers who needed the money. If I were to do anything with a radio it might be to boost the range. Other than that it seems to be a waste of money. I would never have echo. It just makes it more difficult for others to hear and understand what you are saying. I have had some who use echo get mad at me when I keep asking them what they are saying. I suppose they get upset after spending so much money on a radio that you can't understand. Most use too much echo. It is much easier to understand when you don't have echo.
