I don't think it takes "a crystal ball" to predict that, within just a few years, American trucking will have gone the same route as American manufacturing has gone - unless NAFTA gets repealed.

Please be advised that H. Con. Res. 22 would "express a sense of Congress that NAFTA should be repealed" [emphasis mine]. While it would not repeal NAFTA outright, it certainly would be a very important step toward effecting that. This, in itself, is exactly why the bill deserves and needs widspread support. That could only happen if it gets (at least some) publicity - which it still is not getting.

While every other means must also be used to fight this "pilot" Mexican truck program, the fact nevertheless remains that the only way it could possibly be stopped once-and-for-all would be to repeal NAFTA - the sooner the better! The sooner H. Con. 22 is passed, the sooner NAFTA will be repealed - which not only can be done; it must be done!

As it stands now, the Mexican trucks are rolling despite all OOIDA's and the Teamsters' best efforts. "Band-aid fixes" have proven (so far) to be completely ineffective. Isn't it time to add something new to the fight?

They're here. Unfortunately, I can't post links to the story yet. I'm sure most of ya'll have heard by now anyway.

I'm not sure if the laws are different for CMV's, but you may want to inquire about mexican insurance before you cross the border. Google mexican accident laws for more info.

One last thing. DON'T DRINK THE WATER! For a trucker, nothing is worse than Montezuma's revenge. :pottytrain5:

:biggrin_25510:I am new to trucking but not to Transportation and logistics, I have been involved with shipping (Merchant Mariner) for numerous years. I have watched the downfall of American shipping after inforcement of the Jones ACT,SOLAS and now STCW 95...we put American shipping down to a handful of AMERICAN Flagged SHIPS...it is easier to Foreign Flag a ship cheaper labor onboard...less safety restrictions...I hope this does not signal the beginning of the end as it did for the AMERICAN FLAGGED SHIPPING industry.

I guess we have to find a way of trying to make money off the mexican drivers that come across the border since the american trucker will soon be a memory.
You know its bulls**t that they say it will save american consumers millions of $$. The prices will stay the same but the companies profits will grow.

The only problem with this idea is that if this really did happen then it would give the government all the more reason to have mexican companies running freight in the states and expand the project so that they can haul any freight with less restrictions then american companies.

There has to be a better way of controlling this.

well, lets see,,,if some good old boy county sheriffs made sure these mexican trucks rolling through their counties were subjected to maximum enforcement policy(find a violation,no matter what),and some good old boy truckers made life real unpleasant for them wherever they went(releasing 5th wheels at truckstops,occasional/accidental air hose damage, adding fluids to fuel tanks, etc)these guys would get the hint that they are not welcome here.trust me that kind of stuff will happen to you if you go down there taking work from them.if all they do is bring their freight to their destination and ONLY get their backhaul freight to mexico, then it will not be cost effective for them to come here. although the cabotage rules state they cannot load US freight, i seriously doubt our law enforcement will actively monitor them. i work with lots of hispanic drivers who do not want them here either,as they do not want to see their wages fall.it has nothing to do with racism-it is simple economic stability that we need to protect.untill the Mexican government does what is needed to bring that country out of third world status(invest in infastructure, education, end corruption),this is a bad plan.eventually some fool will propose legislation that will allow them to haul domestic(US) freight, then we will be doomed for sure!
