Yesterday while at work I had a late truck come in to my DC to be off loaded. He came in with a Volvo stand-up much like the ones swift uses and I told him that he was going to have to blind side the trailer into the dock because that was the only dock available at the the time. After I told him this I saw the look on his face that he really did not want to blind side the trailer or that he was worried about hitting something in the yard. BTW our yard is extremely tight. After a few failed attempts I noticed that he was getting upset with it becasue he flooring it when he had to pull up. After another failed attempted he got out of the truck and I asked him if he just wanted to drop the trailer where it was and I would use a single axle we have to get it into the door or that I could his truck to get it into the door because I am used to the tight yard and I have put many trailers into the dock blind sided with a sleeper before. He agreed right way and after pulling out of the bind he was in I was able to to get the trailer into the door with just one pull up as he watched how I did it. When the trailer was in the door I apologized to him and told him that I didnt mean to dent his pride or anything like that I just wanted to get im back on the road so he could get home or to pick up his next load. He just said thank you to he and didnt seem to mind that I did it for him. So what I would like an opinion on from all of you is that was this a bad idea for me to help him out like this? He looked like a very young guy I'm only 24 and he looked to be maybe 21-22, but should I have just made him put the trailer into the door by himself and possible hit something and learn from the experinece or did I do the right thing by putting the trailer into the door myself and allowed him to see how it could be correctly, safely, and quickly? Also im sure this may not matter but I do have my CDL so I didnt just jump into a truck and go at it.

I have let several ppl dock trailers for me. If he is smart that will spur him to get better so he doesn't have to let someone else dock his trailer for him.

Ive done the same thing for drivers. Usually CRST or Covenant drivers who we contract loads too. If I am out in the hostler and see one of these guys that cant back to save their life, I offer to do it because I dont want them blocking the whole yard for an hour. CRST is the worst.

And we always give them the easiest doors to hit. Pretty pathetic. Who cares about their pride? The job has to get done.

Yeah, offer to help, the driver can turn it down if he thinks it will hurt his pride. A BIG part of trucking is helping each other when needed, but, a BIGGER part of trucking is knowing the other guy needs help before he asks for it.

I agree does your insurance cover another truck? As for the help I always welcome it. If I'm at a truck stop or yard that is difficult to back into I always welcome spotters the more eyes the easier it is to back. If I'm at a truck stop and trying to get in a tight hole and have set up wrong and the trucks start piling up behind me. I just get on the cb and say I screwed that one up i'm going around to try it again please don't take my spot. Most of the time it's still there for me and the other trucks can get on there way.

I don't mind help. There are days when a driver can't back for crap, regardless if its newbie or a thrity year veteran. Anyone tells you otherwise is full of crap. While its true the 30 year vet will have fewer days of crappy backing than a newbie it will and does happen. I've been to tight docks where all I needed was maybe one pullup to get it in.:biggrin_25525: There have been times where I had all the room I need and couldn't back it in to save my life.:biggrin_25510: I have also helped drivers into tight docks,as well as being helped myself.

I helped few fellow drivers in my time as local driver.

No shame in helping one another, we all do the same job.

God knows I need help hooking a set from my fellow yard hostler who's been hooking sets for 30 years. Takes him about 30 seconds. Takes me..well we won't go into that :)

I think you did him a big favor. Nobody likes to blind side in. Good to help him out.
