Hi there,This is my first post, but I have been lurking on here for 2 weeks.I have been doing my research on all the trucking companies..I have been in construction for 11 years, and have decided to finally do what I have always wanted to do-drive a truck.I need my cdl,and have done some looking at the trucking companies that train.I have talked with Maverick and put it an app,and also at Wat/shep.I wanna drive flatbed.I have one problem,I did something stupid 12 years ago(got a dui)and Maverick told me I couldn't train at their school, but if I got my cdl on my own I could still work for them.Funny thing is I did a background check on myself, there was no dui on it.Maverick said that they will check and see, that it would show up on the system they use?Are all schools this way?I could get my cdl permit, but where am I going to get a truck to get my driver test?Is Wat/shep a good choice?does anyone know about their training?I really like Maverick.:biggrin_2552:Sorry this is a LONNNNG post! Thanks for any and all input.

Check with your local employment commision and see if there are any local trucking schools and if they will help pay for it. You really are better off if you get your CDL on your own, that way you don't have to sign a "slave" contract to drive.

I am in my first week at maverick right now. I paid my own way thru school it cost me $1750.00 at Arkansas state university so check your community colleges they are cheaper. As far as dealing with maverick I will tell you right now and I cant stress this enough be honest with them and do not B.S. them.Good luck man :iroc:

I got a dwi in Sept. '03 (worst and most expensive mistake of my life). I paid a lawyer a LARGE sum of money to have it taken off my record. Hasn't quite been 4 years and I'm already pre-hired with Hogan and Star (favoring Hogan, naturally). If it's not on your record, it's not on your record. Additionally, you stated it was 12 years ago. You can get a job with any company you want if it is SOMEHOW on your record, since it was so long ago. Most companies look for them to be at least 5 yrs. old. Some even 3 yrs. Good luck and like someone said, you should go get your cdl on your own, because if you go through company training, they'll require you to sign a contract. And that company could turn out to be not the best one to suit your needs.

Of course the upside to a slave contract is this:
You are less likely to turn into a "job-hopper" before you get experience.

I know that Schneider would take you, though I don't recommend them right now. Talk with Maverick again after they check, if it's not on your record then they should be able to train you.

Just remember, once you go somewhere, try and stay put for that first year, even if you don't have a contract. Employers will look at that. If you changed jobs 2 or three times in your first year it will SEVERELY affect your potential to get another job. Stick it out with a company, and get that year, and it shows dedication to the job... A GOOD thing.

It seems that a lot of community colleges have truck programs, and a good company will help you pay it off if you stay with them long enough
