Nothing racist at all about the law. Our DOT officers are not required to learn multiple languages to do their jobs in our country were the main language is english.
If canada ever comes up with a law stating that I have to speak french then I will be happy because then I won't have to go there.
Last summer, I was doing some dump work hauling hotmix. The contruction company hired on us and a couple other local driving companies to help with the hauling. One company was a company owned and operated by a local mexican and he had a driver that could only speak spanish. When we started, they told us to not blow our gates unless we were at either the dump site or the load site. Well the spanish speaking drivers could not understand and they were blowing their gates open rolling down the highway more then 10 miles from the dump site. They were leaving piles of hotmix (asphalt) on the highway more then 10 miles away from the dump site. Knife River Materials had to send equipment out to clean up the messes that the spanish drivers were making. Also were had to follow directions given by the load boss. The spanish drivers could nto understand the directions and were turning around on few mix and tearing up the fresh road. The Spanish trucking company was finally released from the job because of the extra expense they were causing due to not being able to follow directions due to not beingable to understand the english language.
Your driver has to learn our language to do business in our country. We don't have to learn his language.
Help please. fmcsa 391.11(b)(2)

Which they should.
One of the thing I wrestle with is the "pick your battles" mentality that a lot of folks here can exhibit. Hours of service trump the list. Some folks have no problem running a couple of extra pounds in the trailer cuz' it pays better. Distracted driving. It doesn't begin and end with cell phones, I've seen guys with more electronics in their truck than a Best Buy clearance sale. Wait until someone gets popped for bypassing those pesky emissions - it's coming.
I wasn't too easy on Yousa myself, but I personally am tired of people who can be a minority playing the "racist" card when they don't get their way.
And he's drawing the line and still doing it. Since we didn't give him an answer to work around it, and a big hearty, "Welcome to America" - we are a bunch of bigots and racists.

So be it......Meltom and BigfootWRL Thank this. -
I am tired of minorities using race to avoid having to abide by the same rules as the rest of us.
Brickman, jbatmick, Ricotta and 1 other person Thank this. -
Big difference between debating whether or not mandatory rest periods makes a driver safer, and whether or not a driver should have the skill set to read a variable message road sign.

Oh for heavens sake!
Get off your high horse and learn the language!
We're racists because we want you to learn the language of our country?
You're being stubborn, biggoted and unreasonable. You hide behind a false immigrant sense of entitlement.
And before you go off accusing anyone of being a racist, I am an immigrant. I didn't speak a word of english when I arrived here 58 years ago. Nor did any of my siblings. You would be hard pressed to hear any accent from me when I speak.
My parents learned english as quickly as possible and to their dying day had very little accent.
So quit complaining, learn the language and become a part of your adopted country.
I'm tired of people hiding behiind the language barrier and using it as a crutch.G/MAN, 1988pete379, dieselbear and 3 others Thank this. -
There are many who come to this country and expect us to learn their language rather than them learning the language of this country. States spend billions of dollars on printing in different languages. It is unnecessary and an expense that we don't need.

My wife is from Holland....She speaks english with no trace of an accent as well as dutch....She did not speak english when she emmigrated to this country.
You're whining about us being racists for expecting you to speak the language of the country that YOU have decided to live in?
That is IGNORANT!
I have no sympathy for the deadbeats that come here and want us to change to suit them....How would you have reacted if I came to your country and expeceted YOU to accomidate my lack of ability to speak your language?
We are to ONLY country in the world that is expected to bow down to this ####!
If you don't like the way we do things here you're welcome to go the hell back where you came from!Emulsified, dog-c, chalupa and 6 others Thank this. -
In your perception, but the OP's perception is different. -
If there is a rule (and there is) that CDL drivers be able to speak and read English, then all the tests should be given in English.
At one time they allowed interpreters to come in with the applicants when they take their tests. Turned out the "professional interpreters" were feeding the applicants the right answers! No more of that!BigfootWRL, G/MAN and Brickman Thank this. -
Well.. now we have a hotline they can call.
