I hauled a few waste water loads into Dupont in Deepwater and cleaned out at Bridgeport a few times. They usually reloaded me over in South Philly at some antique chemical plant. Like most of the east coast company terminals, they weren't real friendly to a reload system driver from the midwest. They felt like we were stealing their freight.

well i know bridgeport was set-up in such a way that top seniority guys made the hours, and sometimes the bottom starved. (no rotation-no wheel) i know this is true at every company everywhere, there was plenty of animosity between the top and the bottom guys. almost every new guy there spent years just trying to get off "sleeper team" (forced dispatch) and get a single gig.

single running was all by the hour, didnt matter how far you went. time and half after 45 hours. 1987, teams split .33cpm and hourly was $12.50

Our board was set up as a hog board. Top seniority guys got their choice of loads daily. The guys lower down got what was left. Our mileage pay was .34cpm, and $10.75 for clock time. The guys doing local work were on the clock. We didn't have any teams running out of our terminal. If the occasional load came in they would ask for volunteers and if nobody stepped up then the 2 lowest seniority guys had to take it. I ran the reload system most of the time so I only got dispatched off of our terminals load board 2 or 3 times a month unless they were busy with dry bulk, then I ran that.

sounds like a pretty good terminal to be at, did you get many long runs?

will you be getting a pension from them? and if so is the amount fair?

i didnt stay long enough to get mine.

We got loads going to all 48 & all the Canadian Provinces bordering the US. I would take a load out and might stay out anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks. When i was going thru my divorce I stayed out 5 weeks one time. I told dispatch to just keep me running and they did. I did a dedicated run for Proctor & Gamble for a while. Running dry bulk from Columbus to Sacramento, 3 turns a month.

I got screwed out of my teamster's pension. I was in the outlaw Local 507 in Cleveland, Jackie Presser's local before he went national. They weren't in the Central States fund, they had their own deal. You had to have 10years minimum to be vested in it. I come in at about 8 years. The last year I was there they managed to get the union voted out. Once the union went working conditions went downhill fast. they basically told us if you want to keep your job be ready to buy a truck. It was a good gig while it lasted.

at the time, that was the kind of running i wanted, but it was mainly team for the bottom. bridgeport's big customer was alway dupont deepwater. they had huge fleets of dedicated trailers. freon, lead plus other stuff. so all of that work was out and back, thats why there was always so much sleeper team, because deepwater required it.
plus other customers, when i was there always 8-10 teams.

i did get some single running here and there but not enough to keep me happy. also, all hours (single) worked on sunday were double time! that was sweet, some guys would get 12-15 hours of that!

i worked 8 years in a union hazardous waste facility. about 2 years after i left that job, the company went bankrupt. i won't be getting anything from that "pension". we weren't in the teamster health & welfare. it was "company" benefits & pension.

I guess I'm beginning to see the reality of yankin' tankers. I read about the reefer guys complaining about waiting a lot. So do tanker guys.

You van and reefer guys get to sit in the cab. Tanker guys stand out in the cold looking for leaks.

Get to the consignee on time, scale, find the right tank in a square mile made of nothing but tanks, submit a sample, connect the hoses, pressurize the tank........and wait for the lab to approve the sample.

If those lab rats were a little faster we would be done on time and the consignee would pay a lot less demurrage. Just sayin:yes2557:

I've had some loads were I got more in detention pay than I did from the load itself. Usually happens when someone orders a load before they have room for it and I have to wait until they use what they got.
