2011 Final Rule
The goal of this rulemaking is to reduce excessively long work hours that increase both the risk of fatigue-related crashes and long-term health problems for drivers. A rule cannot ensure that drivers will be rested, but it can ensure that they have enough time off to obtain adequate rest on a daily and weekly basis. The objective of this rule, therefore, is to reduce both acute and chronic fatigue by limiting the maximum number of hours per day and week that the drivers can work. On average, the rule reduces a driver’s maximum allowable hours of work per week from 82 hours to 70 hours, a 15% reduction. The 15% reduction in the average maximum allowable hours of work based on the new rule results from the restrictions on the use of the restart period.


The rule will mainly affect drivers who work more than 70 hours a week on a continuing basis. These drivers are mostly a subset of long-haul truckload drivers. Local drivers and less-than-truckload drivers, who rarely work more than 5 days a week, are unlikely to be affected.

Well said.

And the ones that whined the least managed their time the best. I saw and managed the "new breed" of drivers about 8 years ago. The guy who would scream and cry because he couldn't get his 10 hour break. So, I would bring him in the yard, hop in his truck and go down to the plant and spend 2 hours loading his outbound, while he was home for 10 hours.

Then, he would come to work, go an hour down the road, and pull over and go to sleep, because during said 10 hour break, he got 20 minutes of sleep.

It was a lot nicer back in the day when you could manage your own time built around your body clock.

Me too. In fact, I was contemplating smashing my head on the desk and trying to read it again, but just gave up.

Could you explain that better to us? I don't know if it is the residual brain damage from trying to read the last post in all CAPS. You have 3 Qualcomms? Or 3 driver ID's. Is that like having 2 log books? And when you cook your hours, is it steamed, broiled, boiled, baked, or sauteed ?? Just wondering.

It's about $$$.... and to a much smaller degree about control.

Think about it... Who is lobbying the most for the mandate?... besides, companies in the industry? Some research will tell you insurance companies... Who stands to profit from mandated EOBR's? EOBR service providers, correct? Who has major investments in EOBR companies... Gasp, just some of the largest insurance companies in the country.

 

You know some drivers will try to outsmart the DOT man with an EOBR. But the programmers have already built in tamper evident coding into the software and The Black Box(ECM) on your engine is already recording millions of bits of info.

4000 is ridiculous.

Ive logged over 3500 on elogs. Not every week but I have.

2000 miles is ridiculous also. I average about 2700 a week.

You caught me at the end of a great month. 5 weeks. 13,942 dispatched miles. 3 days in the shop at 3 different times, and 1 day lost sitting waiting for I-80 to open in WY.

No I didnt make it home for the holidays, but that was my choice. I was given a choice... 4 days for one of the major holidays, or an entire week off at home in Jan.

4 days max being the usual Company policy... So for me it was a good choice.

I ran loose leaf paper logs at Swift -Hated them - ATE UP MY TIME AS WELL - Cost me time and money.

Ran with eLogs at Schneider and LOVE THEM - More miles - More money - less hours

Log it as you run it. Follow HOS rules and you will be fine.

 

If you think eLogs are more "efficient" then paper logs, you're a mongoloid.
