Brickman, a friend keeps bugging me to haul cars as an owner operator, he tells me he's pulling over 200k net per yr. He says he pays 15% of gross to the broker he leases with, who dispatches for him and uses 22% of gross to pay his exspenses the rest he claims he takes home. He says gross for one year going balls to the wall is around 450k. dose all this seem right?

no i didnt hear none of that, that is about what i thought when i heard it. When he's home he spends money like crazy. I wanted some second opinions since i hear talk of 200k per truck an trailer investment before the pay day starts.
-
its a little bit higher than $200k for a new 10 car stinger not to mention the insurance and fuel and straps, height stick & tie down bars and other related costs.
-
hey ho7, thanks for the heads up. is there any way you can talk to me more about all the necessary cost? i'm considering car hauling as o/o, just would like to have all my info in first.

Ted you'll never get insurance right out of trucking school. If thats what you want to do go get 2 yrs experience all the while saving as much as you can towards your equipment purchase.
It is not necessary to buy NEW starting out either. A $60,000 truck and $50,000 used 7 car is a good place to start. Buy a Cottrell the best I've seen. A solid trailer can be a 10 yr or longer equipment investment with proper maintenance.
I'm just starting auto hauling as O/O. I don't know about your friend's claims of $450K a yr gross. That would be nice! -
i recommend working as a company driver first untill you can build up contacts and capitol and most importantly, expierience.trucking has bankrupted many a person.i run a 2004 boydstun/peterbilt 10 car stinger with 500k.the maintainance and upkeep is nonstop.
