May I ask what Paccar is for motor/engine? I have never heard they have developed an own engine. Can it be so Passar call for example Paccar call DAF:s engine for their own?
Merzedes own Detroit and Cummins owns of who?

Please tell a confused Swede how it is.

Hi Lars....yes,you are correct...Paccar(who own DAF since 1996)are marketing the DAF 105 MX engine as their own unit in the States for fitment to Peterbilts.

What has been your experience of the DAF engines in Sweden....are there many DAFs operating in the harsh conditions up there?

    Hi Riverstick,

I’m not a driver but interesting of trucks. Of what I have seen most DAF’s are long hauler of 88.000 lbs type and use only one trailer as you in USA. The most comes from Eastern Europe to Sweden and it can be 1242.75 Miles (200 Swedish mil) if they goes from the middle of France. And yes Riverstick, they have to drive both summer and winter and we have 4-5 months of winter so they can drive when it is 20-25 degrees below zero. I have seldom seen A DAF as a timber hauler reaching 133.000 lbs. For this type of load Volvo FH13/16 and Scania 620 is used. They as run into the forest are used to rely on this two makes since decades. But as a 24 meters truck and trailer setup we have both MAN and DAF as transport food and other thing around Sweden. Other works is as lifting truck with heavy Effer crane mounted. Many like DAF’s large carbine as I think is a little greater than Volvos. But we have also some drivers from Poland as come here sometimes and some use DAF.

If we compare truckers driving miles with they in Sweden so is the Swedes much shorter every day and most of them can sleep at home. So according to that I wonder if DAF’s engines are made for hard working long periods. I have no clue about that but have they test run DAF105 in USA and got good results? If their motor is worn out before 600.000 miles so isn’t that any good. In Sweden Boliden Iron Ore used several Volvo FH12 as had to pull one semitrailer and one 5-axle pup trailer together at 160.000 lbs both ways and had a engine as had run 1.000.000 Swedish mile and when they took out that engine was there were only minor worn out. And it had to pull on a long low hill every time and it was running 7/24. A harder work was difficult find in Sweden.

It would be interesting if Scania enter the USA-market because the engine is such strong one and reliable. And I read many long for this make. The problem is they have no agreements between reseller and shops. But it would be danger for other makes if Scania really should make a try because this makes have so good renown.

    Take care
Lars-Gunnar as is my given name

Lars-Gunnar how muck km is 1000000 sw milles

If we talk about hard work probably worlds hardest job for truck is indonesian coal mines there scania/volvo trucks operates 24/7 pulling two trailers gross weight is 200t- 440 000lbs high temperatures 97% humidity steep hills off road with lot of mud .....dust from coal...........

Trucks make 900km per day or 560milles spend 1000L of fuel and they last for 2.5years this is 800000km -500 000milles

Thank you for wake me up!

I don’t know if you got me here if they had wrote 1.000.000 mil when I read about it years back or if it was 1 million km or 1.000.000 kilometers but I think it was kilometers but I can be wrong. It is a while since it happen but I know In USA Volvo have taken in an engine as had run 1.000.000 million miles for overhaul if I not is wrong. I had forgotten a truck and a car collect kilometers’ as then becomes miles and mil.

    Let se:

    We use metric here.
    10 mm is 1 cm
    100 cm is 1.0 meter
    1000 meter is I kilometre
    10 kilometre is 1 mil
    200 kilometre is 20 mil
    2000 kilometre is 200 mil

1.000.000 kilometre is 100.000 Swedish mil
10.000.000 kilometres is 1.000.000 Swedish mil

    10.000.000 kilometre is 6213711.92 miles
    1.000.000 kilometere is 621371.192 miles

The highest value is mile as comes first, then kilometres, meters, centimetres and millimetres.

I would not be surprised to see a Cummins available in a DAF.
    They have been before.

well by official data of DAF mx engine should last 10 services ( each 100 000km) or 1500 000km in your lighter job this should be little bit more

but real life shows different ......

Those Daf's with the 500bhp 14 litre Cummins were a good truck....a real flying machine. A friend of mine had a 520 FH16 Volvo at the time and told me the only truck that could get away from him on a hill was the Daf/Cummins 500
