This is correct, if the truck/trailer was built and delivered with automatic slack adjusters as per the rules/regulations requiring these to be on since 1996 I believe, you cannot go back and put on manuals. You have to replace with automatic slack adjusters.

There are various auto slacks on the market. There is one in particular that has a pawl that must be pulled before adjusting. I don't even think that 10% of drivers even know what a pawl is.
Yes, I have taken a mandatory course and passed a practical and written test on how to adjust manual and auto slacks.
As a matter of fact, the course was an all day event. -

Yes, self adjusting slack adjusters should adjust "as you apply the brakes during the routine operation of the vehicle". If you find that the automatic adjusters are in constant need of adjustment in order to maintain the proper rod stroke the automatic slack adjuster or other associated hardware needs to be replaced. I addition to being a driver I am certified in brake inspection, maintenance and repair.Last edited: Jan 1, 2012

The day you trust an automatic slack-adjuster is the day you need to turn youn CDL in and do something else.

I did as well, but I will not adjust my brakes. I was told that we would be 100% responsible for any thing that happens till the next qualified person works on them, and that is even if it is several months away, or I leave the employment of the company. After I was told that, I wanted "out" of the class, but was told, "no refunds", so from that point on, I was stuck.
