Like 99% of HAMS I got a seart playing with CB radios back in 1960 ....
I built kits as a teen and by the time I started Electronics school in 1963
knew a lot about how they worked .....

Too bad you can't buy kits anymore .....

Your General Lee is really useless on 10 meters....yes it will give you access to the 10 meter band, but most of 10 meters, so I understand is sideband - something your General Lee does not have. You can't even understand what is said on SSB if your radio does not have SSB.

I recommend picking up one of Gordon West's books on tech class. I am starting to study for general and I have the general book as I type. It's well written so anyone can understand it, IMO.

Or...do you have a local ham radio club? Sometimes they conduct classes for the tech classes and they will work with you and help you to understand.

I hear ya Bruce, I'd like to get into building my own radios....were those kits more affordable than buying an already put together ham rig?

I wish Heathkit would re-issue some of their old tube radio kits... I never had the chance to build an HW-101 or a set of twins...

Had a good day on 40 Meters today talked to the guys down in Texas and Ok and around there from Indiana and OH all day. It was good to hear the band in good shape again. Just reinstalled my back up Band hopper on the truck and it is working good with a 706 and a little 300 watt solid state amp i have used for years. Listened to the guys in the West Indies this morning on the same freq. Had some good signals in to Il. I hope to work some more tomorrow. Get your tickets and get in here and work some DX its fun in a mobile.
