Hello Preston: Have a '97 West Star with a 5EK. Overall it has been a good motor. It is used hard. Truck rarely grosses less than 100K lbs and goes up considerably from there. At 706K it dropped rear liner. Motor was overhauled. As many have said here, keep Cat out of your ECM. Apparently it is mandatory that ecm is "upgraded" to low emission files. You will be disappointed with new ecm. Do a search, alot has been posted on this. Mr. Haney is very generous with information and has the cure to most of these puter problems. Best wishes...
Preston3 Thanks this. -
This serial number left CAT as a 455Hp at 1800 RPM to Peterbilt.
To have been able to uprate to a 500, the injectors and turbo would have had to been upgraded during the rebuild. I can't look this up to see if it had been done or not.Preston3 Thanks this. -
Ok, appreciate the info. I know it will turn 2100rpm. It runs good like a stock 475 to me,but I don't know how a 455 runs compared. My w9 has a 1mm so its hard for me to gauge the power differences. Mr. Haney if the truck was rebuilt with bigger injectors what would be the part number on them also what turbo should be on it. What hp would you flash it to and how much for the tune. The truck is super tight and well cared for.

It could have been uprated to a 475 Hp with the smaller 455 Hp injectors in it with only doing a turbo upgrade at the time of the rebuild. The 455 and 475 use the same injector from the factory. The RPM listed in CAT SIS is where the peak power is, not the RPM limit. I would expect it to turn 2100 without any problem, unless it was set back for fleet purposes.
With the bigger injectors you could have many different part numbers over the years. These are the part numbers you'll be looking for the 500 or 550 ratings.
118-9035, 0R-4893, 10R-2780, 0R-9258, 10R-0958, 10R8502
The 550 Hp turbo could be many different part numbers also through the years......I don't have all the numbers for these. Here's some possible numbers
124-3759, 126-9920, 132-3649,0R-6690
The 500 Hp engine would have had a different turbo, I don't have any of these part numbers
With this ECM you can flash it with many different files to achieve the Hp you want.
I'll send you a PM with my contact info to discuss how and what can be done. Even with the small injectors there are ways to break the 600 Hp level with ECM tweaks.Preston3 Thanks this. -
Last service record with Cat is from 2006, when it had a valve adjustment. No horsepower increases by Cat.
