Having looked into training and driving different places. I plan to go with Roehl for at least the training. I like their Honor Program and unless I get a better deal, the 2 year apprentice program fits me well and I believe will give me the experience I need while getting a predictable paycheck.

and insert foot. Its easy tell that you really dont think you just shoot off your mouth. Example: I have been retired for 7 yrs, I'm 52 and going to training to drive OTR. I worked for 8 yrs from the time I was 17-25 as an audio visual tech. traveling across the country living in motels setting up audio visual labs in school. For the next 20 yrs I was a printer for a major printing company. Both jobs I made good money, worked 6-7 days a week, 10-12 hrs a day. I worked hard and saved well. At 45 I retired....45.....when you reach 45 and are able to retire come back and tell me how worthless i am for needing trained to do something different in my life. After 7 yrs of piddling around Im bored....I am a worker....and i miss working hard. So I chose to learn something new at the age of 52. When I was young I used to think 25/30 was old....45-60 was real old. Im guessing you are a young guy that thinks you are just the #### of the walk no matter what.....but again when you can retire at the age of 45 come back and tell me again how worthless a 50 some year old is for still being able to do what you do now and probably better after a little training. My advise to you....is open your mind a little more and open your mouth a little less.

Another wealthy individual going into to trucking for something to do. Boy is that an old line. You know where you can blow that smoke. A major printing company - sounds like you spent 20-years running the copier at Kinkos.

People don't retire at 45 if they are successful. Face it, you went on workers comp or disability at 45. If you left printing 7-years ago, it was because you couldn't keep up with the technological change going on in the industry.

Face it buddy, your story doesn't hold water. 20-years as a printer. Apparently, the Major Printing Company didn't think you were promotable.

I hope YOU are paying for your training and not the taxpayer.

You should read a little more. I stated government funds are better directed at training our youth. I said nothing about anyone being worthless. If you want to be a trucker, have at it. Just don't expect the taxpayer to pay for your training.

Oops I forgot, your wealthy and need a hobby. Heck just cash in an annuity and buy a truck.

Good luck "piddling" around in trucking!

In real life you been picked on and bullied so much and have to take it, that you get on here and try to be a big man. Its the only place you can shoot off your mouth with out getting your butt kicked. So keep on spewing your crap. Your safe little man.

I gotta get in here, this seems to be getting out of hand.I worked hard my whole life, and at age 54,a plant I was working in closed down.Too young to just hang it up and retire I paid my way thru a truck driving school and went on to drive for a living, after about a year of that I bought my own truck and leased it on with a big trucking co.At the age of 60,I decided it was time to retire, which I did,and just work a part time job close to home. Part time jobs were easy to find, however they usually turned into 60 to 70 hrs.per week, which I dont classify as part time. At age 68 due to a medical thing I went back on the road driving truck for about a year.I have since retired again and I hope it sticks this time. However I left my last job under very good cicumstances and I am pretty sure that if the need ever arises I can go back to work driving for that co. We all have different situations to overcome in life, and if need be I will be out there trucking again.True some of us go back to work just for a hobby, but hey with all of the driving positions out there those people are not taking work away from anyone.Way too many younger folks who aint gonna drive a darned old truck, they would rather sit around and feel sorry for themselves and let the hard working taxpayers take care of them.

All you guys are right, so you can shake hands and call it a stalemate. I see good points on all sides, so no one loses face in my mind.

    Well stated.

The only thing I don't understand is the bad rap our youth are getting. I have 2-kids and get to interact with them and their friends. I find them bright, ambitious, and wanting to carve out their niche in the world. Every generation has its ne'er do wells, and malingerers. Every generation also has a Bill Gates or Albert Einstein. Casting the net too wide leads to a lot of generalizations that bring out the worst in mankind.

Road Dog I applaud you. You did it the right way. I also used personal resources to go to CDL school. Since it was my money, I did everything possible to save a buck. I negotiated the tuition to $3,000, everyone else was paying more than twice that. They didn't care, they were all their under some government funded training program.

All this started because I was surprised that someone who left the service in 1973 was tapping the government for re-training. I guess if the benefit is there, then why not use it. But at the same time one can't be bashing single mothers, and every other person getting some kind of government assistance.

I wish you the best. You seem like a good person.

I really don't go for the personal attacks, unless someone else starts them. I will end this simply. You don't have ANY facts.

An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the person", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to an irrelevant characteristic about the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. It is most commonly used to refer specifically to the ad hominem abusive, or argumentum ad personam, which consists of criticizing or personally attacking an argument's proponent in an attempt to discredit that argument.

Ad hominem arguments are always invalid in syllogistic logic, since the truth value of premises is taken as given, and the validity of a logical inference is independent of the person making the inference. However, ad hominem arguments are rarely presented as formal syllogisms, and their assessment lies in the domain of informal logic and the theory of evidence.[1]

Well, I didn’t mean to start such a heated brouhaha, but now wet behind the ears, self centered, me-me-me Lil’ slipshift has given me cause for affront and made it personal. All I can tell you is son, it sounds like you need a lot of lessons in life well past a needed attitude adjustment.
It just so happens I lost my job, after my wife of 16 years cheated on me and stole thousands of dollars resulting in a divorce and near financial ruin. That’s my bad luck, and I’m not whining but I had limited options to make a decent living and a new life, so I chose this one and Roehl and yes, I’m going to take advantage of the offered help from my country. **Come to think of it, perhaps in some part those limited options may be due to people like you with the attitude that 54 is too old to be a productive citizen?
You question my work ethic and choices? How dare you. What do you know of my life or me? You don’t want “your tax dollars” spent on me? I warrant I’ve paid more over my life than you, so let’s just say; they’re spending “my tax dollars”. Feel better now? Of course not, you narrow minded nincompoop. You are exactly the type of person that views the world with blinders on and one who can never be happy if things don’t fit exactly within your tunnel vision of reality.
So lets get this straight, since I’m a vet from the draft era (likely you don’t remember that either) and (another) unpopular war, (probably ended before you were born) who has fallen on hard times, you begrudge me some help from the country that I served to get back on my feet and be productive? It should go to whom for what better purpose again? Exactly who is more deserving again? You want to talk about a broke country, not being able to afford it? How about the hundreds and hundreds of billions wasted in Iraq? Plenty of money available for that, but I’m sure you don’t mind; and you want to talk about making mistakes? Seems we never learn as a country either… but I digress.
I’m sorry I’m an old fart who will likely only try to work for another 15 years or so. I’m sorry you consider me a waste of benefits. I guess when they bury me it will really upset you. Well, don’t let it keep you up at night, it will only happen once and it will be my last benefit from my country… the one I served, like you? I’ll rest in peace, proud that I did my part, and in return, my country did there’s. I guess that's part of why I love this beautiful nation.
Good luck to you, wherever you go. I hope you gain some compassion and wisdom along the way.
