Hi there, my name is Jeremy and I decided not long ago to look into getting a CDL license as a way to provide for my wife and family, but I have a few serious questions I would like to ask all of you experienced truckers before I dive in head first.
First I want to ask is it worth it? I wish to make a income so my family can live comfortably. If so which companies should I apply to out of school which would treat a rookie fairly well, are there any I should avoid at all costs? Do all companies lie about benefits and such and push their employees to break the laws that are in place to protect truckers?
Next question is when a company like Schneider says 2 weeks on one week off is that reliable? Family again is important and I would like to know if I become a trucker will I still see them fairly often with enough time to enjoy it?
Next question is does anyone have any suggestions or cautions when it comes to making my relationship with my wife work if I become a trucker? I know this seems more of a personal question, but again I want the knowledge of all you senior truckers, I greatly respect your experience and this is why I seek your guidance.
Last thing I wish to ask is what can I expect as a rookie? Say I get in with a good company, and the pay works out ... what can I expect on the road from the community? will they be supportive or will I be treated more like competition? Are there really all kinds of seedy people who hang out at the rest stops and if so how best can I avoid any trouble with them? And on a scale from one to ten with ten being the worst how dangerous can this job be?
I thank you guys for being patient with me and im also sorry for asking so many questions. I am dead serious about this so i would value any input or knowledge with the same value as gold.
Thank you![]()
