Had trouble with freeplay in clutch pedal. Over about 2000 miles got progressively worse to point of not disengaging. When tore down found bell housing cracked. Which came first, clutch defect or bell housing crack? Any ideas?

Almost impossible to say for sure, but with a 10 year old trans, I would be inclined to suspect that the bell housing cracked as a fatigue crack, and the failure progressed from there. If any of the bolts came loose a bit, or were unevenly tightened, or something happened to make the loading on the bellhousing uneven, it could easily cause the housing to crack over time.

You need to look at the crack and see if it is an older one, or if the metal in the crack is fairly clean, shiny and new. That may give you a hint at where the problem occured.
