Exactly. I can usually tell which students will last at Roehl and which ones won't. The big mouths with the bad attitudes don't last long. That's ok though. I get a new student every week and keeps my wallet fat. It wouldn't be even fatter if they stopped building Cabelas all over. My wife was not happy to hear they were building one in Hammond IN.

in your first year @ any co. be ready to eat crow and drive!! i started like that. pickup early, deliver early, don't complain, just do it. they started me with the first month or so with shortish runs but now after just 5 months solo i average 2900-3200 miles a week (which is higher than the stated Co.average of their drivers of 2500 miles) crap, week before last i had 4500 miles because i asked for a NW run about a month ago and finally got it. BTW i drive for USA Truck. it doesn't matter though, just get your load assignment, pick it up in a timely manner and deliver it the same.
i suspect there are a lot of "rookie" drivers around here that should read my thread here :http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...ckers-advice/27669-how-to-get-more-miles.html

But why should you even have to explain this to anyone over the age of 16 ? This is just not something that happens in the trucking industry. You go to work at Mcdonalds, 7-11, walmart , factory , anywhere, you start with the crap jobs and prove yourself and work your way up. Its a fact of life. Geeeez what kind of sheltered life have you guys been leading. I will be starting school after the middle of Oct. I have told my wife from the start...." I will be away from home alot and maybe not making much pay for the first 6-9 months till they find out I am dependable and I work to get the respect of being one of their favorites". Its a natural thing for people to have favorites, thats not something that comes with a signiture on a employment line. Its something you have to earn. Something your work to achieve. Then when you do get it this way...you will feel a whole lot better about yourself and what you have accomplished. Take some pride in what you do. There is no pride in quitting without trying. And there is no pride in whineing like alot of people do on here.

Moujick, Don't know what state you're in but we used the Crist tests over and over and did pretty well. Don't know if the link will post - that's up to the Admins here: http://www.cristcdl.com/otc/

    Good Luck! :biggrin_25520:

i could see that across from the hotel :)

made me wish i could get to it my last time there... woke up to a hotel with a lakeside veiw :biggrin_25523:

i sat there goin "man.. if i could get to cabelas and get me an inflatable raft..."

for those of you that dont get it: end of augest there was a HUGE rainstorm in indiana that flooded parts of hammand and gary, practicly our rigs were the only thing that could get thru the puddles @ the terminal, and we needed big trucks to make wakes in the 3-8 foot deep water so we could get out... to make things more interesting: that was the day i tested to get my own truck... talk about interesting :biggrin_2559:

and on topic here... im in EvoIII. my dispatcher is already figurin ill be out by november (which kinda sucks cuz i really like kim :biggrin_2557:)

i got my truck on august 26th, went home the 27th for 3 days, came back out augest 31st to september 10th. in these 12 days i racked up a lil over 4000 miles. it may not be alot, but im gaining alot of experiance and getting the hang of this job. i never turn down a load, and just the other day i helped dispatch out of a huge bind by running down and getting a trailer from a customer that wanted it off thier lot asap. i was the closest bobtail @ 200 miles away and figured "meh... why not"

Folks, here's a friendly piece of advice.
If your still in Evo III, don't be complaining about your runs. This is an evaluation! If they see your griping and moaning already, what do you think they are going to do? They are going to cut your miles and make you want to leave so they don't have to deal with you.
If you have a serious, saftey type problem, then by all means let someone know about it, but some of the complaints I have seen and heard are just stupid.

...which of course spoils things for those with real complaints. I have the same problem where I work.

In response to the original post, I felt his pain. I am a "type A" personality that began a new career in mid life and did not realize all of the nuances of this industry. Many times I have thought of quitting Roehl. After over a year of "toughing it out", I have found that all things considered, they are a pretty good place to work. I know that there are things that could be improved upon, yet by industry standards, this company does most things better than others. This is an over the road company. There are fleets to get you home, and there are fleets to maximize earning potential. I have found that you can't have them both.
Sitting occasionally and waiting for a dispatch is certainly part of the job. Perhaps with smaller companies it is less freqent, I don't know. Miles per week? Well, that is a week to week proposition depending upon freight availability, your willingness to go into certain areas of the country, your on time delivery history, well this list could go on and on. As I stated earlier, I have considered leaving several times, but I am glad that I didn't. My miles range from 1800 on a slow week to 3200 on a good week. Dispatch has on their screen a number of miles per week that the planners want to utilize you. I have seen this number on my profile and asked what this was. I was told I have been allocated 2400 miles per week. My miles for the last 6 months average just over 10000 minimum to my best one being 11243. Those are fact, not numbers to impress anyone, just honest figures for those who may be looking at Roehl for a career. In any event, the original post stated that he felt wronged by the overweight fine being placed upon him and that Roehl kept money for retreiving the truck, among other things. These ARE outlined in great detail in the handbook! Perhaps he was given bad information regarding leaving the truck, etc. but these areas are discussed in great detail in orientation and training, as well as the handbook. I wish him the best of luck in his next venture, whatever it may be. To anyone who may be interested in Roehl: Perfect, no. Good starting place, yes. At least stay there long enough to get the required experience to find work that you like to do. Over the road is a tough life. But with experience you can find regional, local or most any type of driving work you care to do. But everybody has to start somewhere and it usually is the bottom. Things do get easier once you know the game.
Sorry for the long post, but work, like life, is a lot about attitude and commitment.

I don't know if I'd want to be one of there "favorites". You set them up for a potential letdown and yourself for a stab in the back. I prefer to just do MY job to the best of my ability, and not to have to pick up anyone else's slack.

Oh, I do take a little pride in my job. I delivered about 65-70 bills over about 1500 miles this week. Now it's time to celebrate with a beer or three.
