Looking to get back into the industry. I have 5 years of experience but have been away for about 10 years. I am having a hard time finding a company that will take me without some kind of refresher course, & I can't afford to do that right now. Anybody know of a company that willl give me a chance to start again with them? I have heard that Swift might take me. I have also been told by a driver that Dolphin Lines would give me a chance, but can't seem to find any info about them. Wil-Trans may also be an option, but I know little about them as well....except that they are affiliated with Prime. I have no accidents & have always been a good employee. Always on-time with my deliveries....etc. Any advice would be appreciated!

The companies you're looking at are to big. Try smaller companies, they are more likely to hire you.
    Good luck,

schnieder allways looks for people to train for free. theres enough terminals around you could have one close.be prepared to be treated as a newbie. you really are starting over as they see it. i would think you would have learned your lesson the first time, like grabbing a hot iron.

Can't get it out of my blood. Never wanted to leave but became a single parent for 10 years. Wouldn't trade that for anything ... but the road has never stopped calling to me. I started my career with Schneider straight out of school but they told me I had been off the road too long for them to take me back without a refresher course.

Have you kept your CDL valid the whole time? If so, start calling the small guys in your area. They are the ones that will give you a shot, if there is one. ALOT has changed in 10 years, hell they've changed the log rules three times now from the originals that weren't changed for 50 years.

A refresher would be wise, IMO, and a lot of places will pay for it or a whole new bout of school if you sign a contract for 6 mo to a year. If you go this route, read up here before you commit to anything. There are a few that are notoriously bad like CRE and TA.

Good luck driver, if you did it for 5 years before, we already know it's in your blood. If you have to pay your dues again, suck it up for a while. With a little recent experience and a 15 year seasoned CDL you should be able to get on with a decent outfit in no time. Don't hesitate to call on your local LTL carriers either.

Unless you let your CDL go, for most companies, it doesn't cost you money out of pocket for a refresher. You don't go through CDL classroom training. You just go back out with a trainer until he signs you off.

Don't let one companies rules deter you. Check with several.

You can always become a orange hauler.

I have kept my CDL and endorsements...except haz-mat. I will need to renew that at some point. $ is a little tight right now. I feel like the driving part will come back easily, but I will have to learn the changes in hos and any new regulations. I don't mind going with a trainer, and expect I will have to, just want a chance to get started. I was hoping that my experience & the fact that o still had my CDL would carry me a little farther, but I will not give up. I'm rather stubborn!

Just noticed your in Brandon. That sucks. Check with Comcar, Roehl, JBS Carriers and FFE for bigger companies. Since you've kept your CDL, an idea for you might be to stop by the truck parts places like Fleetpride, Truckpro, etc heck even the truck junkyard and chat up the counter guys. The places I go to here in Orlando have the same guys that were there 8 years ago when I moved back to FL. Maybe get some cheap business cards made up at OfficeMax that you can throw on a bulletin board. I got a 1000 for $30 last time. Overkill sure, but it's only $30.

Good luck living in FL. That area is overly saturated with drivers looking for jobs and the fact that it is a consumer state and not a producer state doesn't help. Once you get a job, don't expect to see home for at least 3 weeks each time you leave out.
