I'm planning on going to school and working for Prime in early to mid February. From what I've been told by the recruiter, they have tanker positions available OTR. I don't think they currently have regional available for tankers, from what I was told. I have a permit with doubles/triples, hazmat, and tanker endorsement. I was looking on Prime's website, and they say less than 1% of their loads are hazmat. I like the idea that I can start out driving a tanker. I've done some research, and there are a lot of things I like about tankers.

I was somewhat mistaken on the percentage of hazmat loads, less than 1% of tanker loads are hazmat. I talked with my recruiter yesterday and found out I have to do most of my training with a refrigerated van before switching over to tanker, so I'm kind of bummed about that.

Most of training is about learning how to manuever a large commercial vehicle without killing yourself, your co-driver, others on the road, crushing parked cars, squashing Susie's little dog - and Susie attached to the other end of the leash, etc. Oh yeah, and parking the stinking thing without running into walls, yellow posts, or other trailers. Its harder using a 53' reefer trailer than a 48' tank - and makes little difference to your career that you started with a reefer trailer. Its also a lot easier to get a trainer in reefer division than it is in tanker - there are a lot more of us.

Then why did we build a tanker terminal in outside Ft. Wayne, Indiana if it is all NE? Prime leases tanker space out of Joliet IL. Always half a dozen there when I drive by. Thats all in the midwest.

Might as well call the little truck wash south of Chatanooga a terminal. About a dozen Prime tankers with no tractors parked there every time I roll through. Thats the South.

Then why comment on tanker. If its what you dont know, then your post doesnt help anyone. Ever wonder how we get some of the dumb questions from people trying to learn about Prime.

hypothetical example: "Uh, I read somewhere that Prime tanker is NE regional only, will they take a guy who lives in Chicago?" (wonder where he got that idea)

Where did you get your info about North East only... That wealth of experiance and information Prime driver: OpenRoadDreamer.

    Well you both heard wrong.

Read the first 5 posts of this thread and you'd know exactly where Prime tankers spend most of their time running and where they do their training.
