One of my questions about OTR driving is feeling "secure" when resting in the sleeper at a truck stop or wherever your place of rest may be. Do you ever feel concerned with your only security system is your doors locks? Or do you feel fine while trying to get your rest? (against those possibly "breaking" into your truck while you are sleeping)
Security when resting on the road?

Personally, I have never had any problems while sleeping. I have an automatic canine Security System installed. It BARKS and BITES!
Walking thru the parking lot is different. You just have to be alert or your surroundings. I have never had any problem with any truckdriver that couldn't be diffused easily. Truck Stop employees are a different matter, though. Particularly Flying J employees. -
Sometimes if I am long distance on my motorcycle I will pull into a rest area and lay my sleeping mat out beside my bike and sleep right there. However, I rely on gut instinct and probably wouldnt do it if I was the ONLY vehicle there. To date I have never had an incident doing it.
So, this being said, if I am comfortable out in the open beside my motorcycle, the chances are I would feel safe in a truck at the same rest area.
I dont do the same thing at truck stops for sure. -
my friend does that and it drives me nuts.....he really roughs it...he went on a 3 week ride from NY to Ca....took zig zag north route, slept outside 90% of the time, and would bathe in rivers and streams....kicker is he makes a very good amount of money, and could easily afford motel or campsite.

More often than not I will find a motel, cos its nice to get out of the elements etc and have a warm shower. However, if I have tight time constraints I will just flop down on the side of the road. This year I only had 3 days to get to Sturgis, SD and back to Edmonton, so I rode like I stole it. On the way there I made it in 24 hours including sleeping on the side of the road (that is 1700kms one way). On the way back it was 27 hours. Best fun I have had in a long time!

They give "Iron Butt" awards in the US for 1000 miles in 24 hours. I have one.

Yup, I know... Congratulations on yours! Only thought about the paperwork while I was in mid ride... I know I can do it! Next time! My ex did from Halifax to Vancouver in 69 hours (close to 5500kms)! He got his Cross Canada Gold award for that one!

I've never heard of a driver having a problem with anyone breaking into their cab while they were asleep inside. Most of us have a few items that while they are actually tools of the trade, could be used as defensive weapons.
OTOH, it really frosts me to just get to sleep and have a lot lizard bang on my door.
