I'm currently looking at the various ways of getting my schooling and getting into the industry. One issue that comes up for me is wanting to eventually move away from the area I'm currently living in.

Currently, I live in Northern Virginia, along the I-95 corridor in the suburbs of Washington, DC with my parents. Finding a company to hire me I do not consider a major issue, as I live in a central enough location along a major transportation corridor. However, while I know darn well that while trucking pays at least slightly better than my current line of work (working in grocery stores in non-management positions), it still does not pay enough (at least for new hires) to afford the ridiculously high cost of housing in this area. Eventually, I would like to move back to the Southeast, preferably the area of Middle Tennessee / Greater Nashville area where I lived for 6 years and where the cost of living is so much less that I could actually afford to live without being supported by family. Not to mention that Nashville is also centrally located with Interstates 24, 40, and 65 passing through the city.

How would be the best way to approach this situation? I figure if I'm an OTR trucker, I probably wouldn't be home too much anyway. I could throw most of my current stuff into storage and free up the space for my parents, sleeping on their couch when I'm actually home. But I don't think that would be a viable long-term solution (Greater than 1 year after getting into the business). For what it's worth, there's no significant other in my life, so I don't have to worry about that. Any advice on how to approach this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Do you still have friends/relatives in that area that will allow you to use their address?

Can you use your parents address and just live in TN? Is that a violation? I know the CDL manual I was reading says you must notify of a change of address within 30 days, but that seems like kind of a gray area.

Otherwise you would just transfer your license once you moved.

The best thing to do is to let the company that you plan on working for know that you maybe moving and see if they have frieght in that area and be able to get you home. The company might have great lanes where you live now and you could get home when you need to however, may not have good lanes where you plan on moving in which case would be harder to get home. Most over the road companies will work with you when moving.
