I have been a local driver for years off and on. I have been offered a job with a otr company who does percentage pay.
Can I get some of the price differences between per mile and percentage pay?
Thanks in advance!

i'm on percentage and love it.
with milage pay you know how much you make for each mile mt & loaded.... percentage is just that you get a percentage of what the load pay is 25%-75%
for me as a o/o on percentage leased to a company my take home is more than the milage o/o make even tho i don't get paid for mt miles, i've sat at a dock with a milage pay truck next to me making the same run i am he's making $1.30 a miles and i'm making $1.74 to do the same run....! i've made as much as 5 X what a milage truck makes for the same load. the down side is sometimes (for me about 2-3 timas a month) it works out to less than what milage pay would be.
but on percentage if you make the same run over and over they may not all pay the same for each trip, i have a friend the makes the same runs i do and sometimes we make the same run at the same time and one load my pay up to $400 more than the other..
most of the time (yearly avg) percentage will pay more -
Look at it this way . Pay varies with loads . If you are paid per mile you'd be lucky to have the pay based on average . Most likely it'll be based on the lowest rate .
The other thing is if you are on percentage and rates go up you are guaranteed a raise . With all other operating expenses escalating carriers will keep per mile pay down . It's one of the few expenses they can control . -
I personally think its better than by the mile,I'm in the expedited business and I get a % pay also and I love it because I know how much i'm going to make.As for pay by the miles you may not know how much your going to make but % pay,yea I think its the best deal.

Percentage pay is good if the people you work for have their #### together. If they can get good freight and keep the deadhead miles to a minimum, you'll be good to go. If they're prone to hauling cheap freight and/or running lots of empty miles, you won't fare so well.
-
But would mileage pay be any better with cheap freight and lots of deadhead ? I get percentage but am guaranteed $.40 a mile for every mile the truck runs including bobtail and deadhead .

Thanks for the input. The company has almost 200too trucks a.d everyone I have been able to talk to there says they are very good to work for.
Goofy question, the have in-truck computers. How hard is it to get use to doing electronic logs? I am familiar with using a computer.
Thanks -
E-logs vary according to the system used but to me they are much easier than paperlogs . All I have to do is log in and make duty status changes along with comments to enter unti numbers , BOL numbers , and whether stopping is for customer , fuel , or break , etc . The computer enters the mileage and location at each duty staus change . All my used and available time for driving time , 14 hour and 70 in 8 are shown current .
