You are right. It's not a walk in the park to be a Christian no matter what your chosen vocation is. Just look at the hard time that critics give Tim Tebow if you want proof. It can be an excellent way to witness to those who need to hear the gospel the most though. Many people will never step foot into a church, so it is up to those who are willing to share the gospel with them to lead them to Christ.
I haven't driven OTR in over a decade, mostly stay local now. I don't listen to the trash talk on the CB. I only use a CB as a tool to help me accomplish what I need to do. My advice to you would be to use any down time that you have to increase your knowledge and enhance your mind instead of degrading your mind with the mind-numbing crap that is out there. PM me your mailing address and I will send you an awesome book to read written by a very good friend of mine who runs a Christian Camp. -
One of the best class rooms in the world is a windshield. Books are great but being there is better.

I am also thinking about having a life as an OTR driver, single and if I get lonely I can Skype or oovoo people. I am also a Christian so during time I can talk to God or visit some churches.

Just don't walk around talking to yourself.
Somone might think you have a bluetooth on.
Just my .02 -
Yeah, I hear ya on working with a smaller "family-oriented" outfit. There are a lot if advantages to that, and I agree, $150 isn't much for some good experience. Is that just for your temporary permit? I just got mine and it cost me $25. I don't always like Michigan, but I guess that's one thing to be thankful for in this state.
Was listening to K-LOVE a while back and they did a story on a chapel in a semi trailer. Sounded like this truck stop chaplain would roll around to truckstops, park and open up the trailer. Sounded like a pretty neat deal. A truckstop up here has free "Trucker New Testaments" alongside those free trucking magazines. Always cool to see the gospel shared in unique ways! -
Hellbilly take it one step at time. It might sound great in the movies and on paper but is a whole different story when you are out there. Not saying it won't pan out for you, just don't go getting rid of all your stuff before you go. Go drive over the road and give it three months. After that three months goes by then make the decision to hock all your stuff.
With that being said it sounds as if you will most likely make a fine otr driver. Dispatchers love drivers in your position!
Good luck on your endeavor man!

Roehl's hometime
10 days out, 2 days off
11 days out, 3 days off
18 days out, 4 days off
24 days out, 5 days off
30 days out, 6 days off
36 days out, 7 days off
This is for the national (OTR) fleet, if you choose the 14/7 or 7/7 fleet the. Those are self explanatory.
I usually stay out 20 days and take 4 off. Although once you stay out over 36 days you can only take off up to 7 days at a time and you cannot bank or "carry over days" to your next hometime. -
Yo Hellbilly...See you are from Line Lexington, lived there as a kid, on corner of Greenwood Ave and Maple. But that was, Geez, 60 years ago, was a good time and place for us kids in that neighborhood. Have not lived in PA since 1967. Planning to go back in April for reunion with the sibs, but that will be out in Lancaster.
My jump into trucking was after working 38 years behind a desk with TWA. It was a involuntary move but it was a good move. Happy with my job and happy with my company. Life is good in a "Day Cab".
Good luck and do your research. Information is the currency to success. -
WOW! That's a lot of responses. This is gonna take a little while so bear with me:
@Goodchoice- you're right, 49 won't be too bad. But number 50 out in the middle of the ocean is gonna be tough. But, as long as I drive 1 load from 1 shipper to 1 receiver, as far as I'm concerned, I can count that as having driven that state. And starting trucking at 27 years old, I figure that gives me 30-40 years to find that 1 load to drive!
@Dirtroad- you're right. It's never easy. But I'm really looking forward to the challenge. What better way to fulfill the great commission by literally going out and making disciples of all the nations! I plan on buying a case of those little pocket bibles that fit perfectly in your back pocket, putting a little sticker on the inside cover outlining Romans Road and sticking 2 tracts inside and handing them out when I get the opportunity. I'm really looking forward to dealing with the LL's (sorry, I really can't think of a better name for them), because they could really use the gospel.
@Saddletramp- I agree. Practicing double-clutching while sitting on my couch just isn't cutting it!
@Mattbh- I'm also looking forward to visiting some churches. I'd love to be able to see Charles Stanley, John MacArthur and James McDonald preach. I really wish I could have been able to see Adrian Rogers, but unfortunately, or fortunately? he went home last year.
@None- don't worry, I've already considered buying a Bluetooth just to keep from looking crazy!
@Medic- I just tried finding the cost break down, but of course now that I need it, I can't find it. But yeah, in PA, after factoring the endorsements for air breaks, double-triple, tanker, HAZMAT, federal security threat assessment, the cost of the permit and the fact that I need to renew my drivers license before I can apply for my cdl permit, the cost is around $150. For whatever reason, if your license expires in less than 7 months, you need to renew it before applying for your cdl. Also, as far as the traveling chapel, they spent about a minute and a half on it in that documentary "Big Rig". I wish they had spent more time on Christian truckers but any amount of exposure is a wonderful thing!
@Chompi- I appreciate your input and I understand your apprehension. I have thought things through SEVERAL times. This is definitely not a spur of the moment idea. And I've figured out that unless I do something soon, 6 months from now I'm gonna have to move anyway because I just can't meet my financial obligations anymore. But I do thank you for your support!
@Drtydiesel- thanks for the chart on roehl. They were one of the companies I was looking at and it's nice to see they have a very reasonable home time schedule.
WHEW!! I am EXHAUSTED after writing all that. I think my left thumb just fell off.....DrtyDiesel and mattbh23 Thank this.
