You know whats funny. They still call me and ask can i pick up 2 hrs or deliver 2 hrs early. I just laugh and say "Can i stop by TA and get truck turned up?" needless to say the line goes quiet.

A lot of people love to complain. I'm having to drive a 1999 mack truck daycab with 800,000+ miles on it. But I also make $60k a year and I'm home everyday with two days off.

A few years ago, SWIFT asked their drivers if they'd prefer nice new trucks or higher wages, they voted for the nice new trucks. If anyone is to be blamed for the low pay at swift, its people caring about driving a flashy piece of machinery.

CCC Transportation, formerly Commercial Carrier Corporation, out of FL has their daycabs governed at 57 mph. They are required to do runs from the Anheuser Busch brewery and down to the local warehouses all across FL and sometimes do 450-550 miles a day. And they pay approx .26-.30 cpm. I was there for 6 years, the last year was when they cut the speed down and lowered our pay, I said peace out.

Still see people going down the road while I work for my new company, I blow their doors off at 65 mph and I always feel bad for the poor guy who works there.

    57:biggrin_25513:

I used to work for this guy on the weekends every once in a while. He was a contractor for a truck auction place here in town. He paid drivers 40cpm to ride in a van to pick up the truck and 40cpm to drive it back.

I drove from Detroit to Indy in an International chassis cab piece of CRAP governed at 57!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It feels like you arent even moving that slow.

My regular job we are governed at 68-69 and its pathetic that Im always blowing the doors off alot of these OTR companies.

i wouldnt mind being slowed down, i mean if they are making more money slowing me down why shouldnt i be payed more for it. i know they run a buisness and there for make the rules. however if there new rule effects how much money i make i should be compinsated for it.

they would never do this if we were payed by the hour while driving. reason is it would cost them more money to make the same ammount of money. with cents per mile we pay for it not them

Nonsense. I get passed all the time before going up a hill when I'm rolling at or close to gross. Almost every time this happens, I catch the truck that passed me about halfway up the hill. It's about gearing and torque use, not speed at the bottom before starting up.

If traffic is that heavy, you're right. A passing maneuver would be inappropriate. However, it only takes one or two minutes max for a truck going 2mph faster than another to get around.

Loads should be looked at, when planning the trip or accepting it, at a 50mph average speed. This gives you a time cushion to take a break in the middle. In a 62mph truck, I was able to average 58mph in most cases. If the company can't schedule loads appropriately, or if you think your bottom line is getting cut into too deeply because of governed trucks, find a new company.

Regarding rearenders and fatigue related crashes: bunk. The percentage of those crashes relative to other types of crashes has decreased over the past ten years. No idea whether it's a product of governing or of HOS.

What I noticed was, at higher speeds, my stress level was higher and I was more fatigued at the end of the day, not less. Yes, I laid down more miles, but at what cost to my own health? Well, I'll tell ya: an untreated UTI dang near laid me on my back in a white room for two weeks. I was always in such a rush that I ignored it. Those miles were not worth my health. And they certainly didn't pay me a dime more than the fewer miles at slower speeds I'm running today.

However. That's not what I started the thread for. I started this to illustrate some of the ridiculous complaints some drivers come on these forums with.

think it depends on the driver, i think im safer faster. my speed is dependant on how safe the area is. my last truck was governed at the factory limit of 85mph.still always was under the speed limit driving in the city. on hwy i drive the speed limit or 3 to 5 over until i hit traffic then slow back down

in a fast truck im always changing lanes and manovering arround keeping my brain active. next thing you know ive ran over 700 mi and i still wanna go. give me a 62 and after 3 or 4hrs i cant keep my eyes off the clock wanting to stop. the whole run i just sit there like a zombie waiting for it to end

I agree that companies govern their trucks to reduce fuel consumption and lower speeds tend to mean less accidents, but after talking to my DM at a company of about 600 trucks, and his dad is the owner, he tells me the insurance company cuts their rate by $350,000 a year to govern them at 65. And this trucking company takes the cheap way out every time if they can.
