Older Freightliner setup uses a shunt and doesn't have a sensor. Better setup IMHO.

How do you know what your alternator is doing if your ammeter doesn't work?

13 volts or better it's working, 12 volts or less it's not.

The volt meter still doesn't show when your batteries are fully charged.

I can run my batteries way down all night then start truck in morning and voltmeter will show 13.8 V but ammeter will show about 40 amps or more. Voltmeter will only show 13.8 until you shut off truck. Then it might show 12 V. But the batteries won't be fully charged until ammeter shows just a half a hair over 0 amps which could take an hour or two to reach.

Battery life is increased greatly when they are never left in an partially discharged state.

Bottom line is you need to know if your batteries are fully charged or not.

You can hook up a trickle charger if you shut truck down before batteries are fully charged. But how will you know without ammeter?
