I have been having an issue with my fuel tank straps breaking. They crack right at the weld where they fold the top around the top mounting bolt and weld it together.
Three out of six have broken now in about seven months. I replaced the first one with a new one ($300!!!) and the last two I have cut a piece from the first broken one and drilled four 3/8" holes and bolted them back together.
Underpsi told me they switched their trucks to the wide straps. What is involved in this swap?
I have the forward mounted tanks with the steps. Straps are 2" wide.
Thanks for the help!!

you may be overtightening them.
I cinch em down about 50 ft. lbs. and back em off 1 turn. they are supposed to have two nuts on each T stud. -
Thanks, I think they are original straps though. I have only had the truck about 7 months.
It has one cross bolt through the top of the strap, the strap wraps around the bolt and is welded back to itself. They break right at the weld. The other end has a bolt welded to the strap.

have had the same problem with straps and found welding them seems to work the best and cheaper than new ones.

I've had problems with mine cracking at the bottom step bracket. I've has three welded now with no problems. $20 vs $200+

my back straps broke and it was in the gap between the top mount and ware the strap meets the tank.

Good excuse to buy yourself a new welder!
