The guys running numbers like, usdot 12345 ny, are pretty much all intrastate. Ive never seen a state after a mc number.

so you only need your company name and usdot number? what about the last 8 of the vin? or the GVW? why do some trucks run so many numbers?

Texas and California have their own numbers and you need to put the state abbreviation in front of their number. For instance TX 123456. You only need the last 8 of the vin if you run Colorado. Otherwise, they will pull you in at every scale to check your registration. Some carriers do put their intrastate numbers on their trucks. Tennessee has a heavy haul number you can put on the truck which will let the scale know you are permitted for more weight. (HF12345). If you only plan on running intrastate, you need to check with your state to see what they may require. My guess is that you only need to have your USDOT number and company name on the truck. You should be able to go to your state's website and find out everything you need to know or you could just give them a call. Some carriers who cross into Canada put their GVWR on the trucks. It isn't necessary if you run in the U.S.

    Sometimes for state regulations.

NJ requires vehicles owned [registered] -or- garaged in NJ [registered elsewhere] to have the GVWR displayed on both sides.

I think Colorado requries the VIN.

What about abbreviations. Is it ok to abbreviate your company name on the side of the truck as long as my DOT # is present?

Check your state's regulations. It should be listed on their DOT website somewhere. Each state is going to be different.
